What is Democracy, and is it the One?

 

Program Description:

Why do we naturally assume that democracy is the best form of government for everyone (including ourselves), and what exactly do we mean by “democracy” anyway? Using comparisons of Ancient Greeks and modern Iraq, Professor Smith discusses how Democracy is not the only ingredient for prosperity, nor is it the only form of government that can lead to equality and freedom—those values we treasure so much in our own country.

R. Scott Smith is an assistant professor of classics in the department of literature, language and cultures at the University of New Hampshire. His research and teaching interests include Roman philosophical thought, Augustan poetry, Latin pedagogy, and Greek & Roman drama. He received a Teaching Excellence award in 2005.
