Lauren Elizabeth Provost

Dr. Lauren Elizabeth Provost is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of New Hampshire. She is the founder and director of the New Hampshire STEM Collaborative, providing innovate stem resources, grant-writing support and professional development in the New England area. Her research and professional interests include STEM education and policy, quantitative methodology, community service and volunteerism. Her statistical experience includes exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, causal models, and multi-level models. Dr. Provost is currently on the Massachusetts Department of Education’s STEM Advisory Council, charged with developing the definition of STEM as well as developing effective strategies for addressing K-12 STEM Education and Policy. She is also the Southern Regional Coordinator for the New Hampshire Teacher of Mathematics Association. As a member of the New Hampshire Institutes of Higher Education, she serves as the liaison to the New Hampshire Society for Technology in Education, facilitating collaboration of technology initiatives at the state level. She also serves as the Higher Education Representative for the New Hampshire Science Teachers Association. Her main passion surrounds issues of equity and the STEM pipeline, concerns she addresses in her role as Public Policy Committee member for the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity. Dr. Provost received a B.S. in Computer Science with a focus on Mathematics, summa cum laude, from the University of Texas at Austin. She received a Masters of Science in Mathematics Teaching in the Mathematics Department at the University of New Hampshire. She later completed her Ph.D. in the University of New Hampshire’s Education Department, where she focused on mathematics knowledge for teaching at the middle school level. Dr. Thomas H. Schram was her doctoral advisor and is the model for her professional career. In all her work, she is an advocate for equity and excellence in education for all students. She is involved in multiple STEM initiatives nationally and at the state level. She is the Curriculum Consultant at the STEM Discovery Lab located at the University of New Hampshire in Manchester. This initiative consists of a collaboration between UNH Manchester, the City of Manchester, Manchester School District and area businesses and industry to build learning and teaching skills in K-12 STEM disciplines. Fostering a climate of equity, Dr. Provost designs STEM Curriculum that incorporates different topics such as space-based research, aligned with Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, the Practices and the New Generation Science Standards. Dr. Provost regularly offers professional development in P - 12 science and mathematics, technology use in the classroom, and integrative STEM methods. Invited talks across New England this past year include Integrating Technology Effectively in the High School Science Classroom, Numbers and Operations from an Algebraic Perspective: The Role of the Common Core and Key Assessment Techniques in STEM Education.
