Artist Colonies

Program Description:

This talk surveys the origins of artist colonies in the mid 1800s in Europe and their proliferation to other continents, including the United States. Artist colonies exist today but the majority of this program focuses on the period 1880 to 1920 when it was these special places that helped to nurture artists and new art movements, such as Impressionism and Expressionism.
