Faculty Excellence Celebration - 11/4/09

University Day 2009On Wednesday, November 4th, The University recognized faculty excellence as the annual Faculty Excellence Award reception in Huddleston Hall.  Nineteen recipients were honored for their outstanding achievements in the areas of teaching, research and public service.  Poster displays of each award recipient will be in Dimond Library and at various locations around campus during the academic year.

Durham Community Breakfast - 10/22/09

University Day 2009The annual Durham Community Breakfast held on October 22 brought together members of the Durham community, business owners, and town officials with members of the UNH administration to learn about community planning. Officials from the UNH Campus Planning department and the Town of Durham shared the status of current projects that promote a strong partnership between the university and the town and what they envision for a reenergized downtown Durham.

 

 

New Faculty Reception 10/8/09

University Day 2009On October 8, President Huddleston and Provost Aber welcomed more than 30 new faculty members to the University of New Hampshire with a pre-theatre reception in the Art Museum followed by a performance of the musical Curtains in the Johnson Theatre of the Paul Creative Arts Center. Special appearances by the show director and several members of the cast made the evening memorable.

 

 

The Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy 10/2/09

University Day 2009The Hubbard Family Award for Service to Philanthropy is the UNH Foundation's highest honor recognizing donors. On October 2, 2009, David Steelman '67 and Virginia Theo-Steelman '62 were honored at a formal dinner in Huddleston Hall. A student scholarship in their honor will be presented to a student in the fall of 2010.

 

 

 

 

President's Distinguished Speaker Series 10/1/09

University Day 2009The President's Distinguished Speaker Series recognizes leaders, thinkers, and celebrated individuals for their contributions to the world and brings them to the University to share what they have discovered with students, faculty, alumni, and guests. On October 1st, Paul Montrone, Chairman, Perspecta Trust and Liberty Lane Partners and Former CEO, Fisher Scientific International Inc. Spoke to a Whittemore School Management Class as well as at a luncheon for distinguished guests. Dean Dan Innis of the Whittemore School moderated a question and answer segment following Mr. Montrone's presentation on the current business climate.

 

 

EcoLine Reception 9/29/09

University Day 2009On September 29, President Huddleston celebrated and recognized all involved in the EcoLine Project with a reception held at the CoGeneration Plant. UNH is the first university in the country to receive the majority of power from processed landfill gas, on campus, the project significantly stabilizes UNH energy costs.

 

 

University Day - 9/15/09

University Day 2009The 2009 Academic Convocation featured the new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, John Aber, the 2009-2010 Discovery Authors and special guest Dr. Susan Lynch, New Hampshire’s first lady. 

This year’s topic on health highlighted The United States as a wealthy nation struggling with health care policies that are not working and rising health care costs that continue to increase despite no measurable advantages.

The Campus Picnic and Student Activities Fair celebrated the beginning of the new academic year with a picnic and outdoor festivities held on the lawn of Thompson Hall. More information.

International Community Reception - 9/08/09

International Community ReceptionOn Tuesday, September 8, UNH celebrated and welcomed its international community of students, faculty and staff at this annual event. Over 250 people attended the reception held in the Granite State Room of the Memorial Union Building.

Commencement – 5/23/09

2009 UNH CommencementOn Saturday, May 23rd, UNH celebrated its 139th commencement. The class of 2009 participated in a "sustainable" ceremony powered by the University's Cogeneration plant.

Honors Convocation – 5/22/09

On Friday, May 22nd, UNH celebrated Honors Convocation. Over 1100 students and their families attended the ceremony recognizing exceptional academic achievement.

The 2009 keynote address, entitled “The Honor of Citizenship: Education, Midwifery, and Democracy,” was delivered by Bruce L. Mallory, Provost and Executive Vice President.

UNH Speaker Joy Breeden gives an inspirational talk at Souhegan High School – 4/23/09

Joy Breeden's presentation, Preparing High School Students with Disabilities for College covers the differences between the laws for K-12 and post-secondary education for students with disabilities, whether or not to disclose a disability on an application, what to expect on campus, and typical services for students with disabilities.

Joy Breeden joined the Academic Counseling Department at the University of New Hampshire Manchester in July 2006 as an academic counselor and disabilities service coordinator. She advises students on the academic planning process, and class and major selection and coordinates accommodations for students with disabilities. Prior to joining UNH Manchester she was at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY where she was completing a Masters degree in College Student Personnel Administration. During that time she was also a graduate assistant in the Career Center at Canisius and she interned as an academic advisor at Canisius and assisted with disability services for students at Buffalo State College in NY. She received her Masters degree in College Student Personnel Administration at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y after going to the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Fredonia for her B.A. in Psychology.

UNH Manchester History Professor Jack Resch gives inspirational talk to the Newmarket Historical Society and Newmarket Veterans Group – 4/19/09

Dr. Resch’s presentation, New Hampshire in the Revolutionary War was timely to the Patriot’s Day holiday. Resch surprised audience members by tailoring his presentation to include specific information about Newmarket. Resch’s presentation was covered by Foster’s Daily Democrat.

Dr. Resch has a special interest in studying the American Revolution and the early republic. He has recently published a book on the subject, Suffering Soldiers: Revolutionary War Veterans, Moral Sentiment and Political Culture in the Early Republic. He has also published numerous articles in professional journals including one appearing the book, New Hampshire: The State That Made Us A Nation. He is also editor-in-chief and contributor to the award winning four volume set, Americans At War: Society Culture and the Homefront.

Commencement Fair – 4/14/09

Over 1,300 caps & gowns were sold at the Commencement Fair in the Granite State Room of the MUB on Tuesday, April 14th. 

Student enthusiasm for graduation filled the room as students looked at their Freshman Class photo, recorded “Shout Outs” to play on the Jumbotron at the Commencement Ceremony on May 23rd, found career options in service organizations such as the Peace Corps and City Year, bought Commencement t-shirts and took photos with Wild E. Cat.

President Huddleston, Governor Lynch host meeting on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) - 4/7/09

Over 250 attendees from businesses, municipalities, schools, and non-profit organizations gathered in Durham at UNH to get acquainted with ARRA, and the estimated 80 ARRA funded programs expected to benefit New Hampshire.

A simulcast was provided to six locations throughout New Hampshire in addition to Webstreaming to 330 plus viewers.

ARRA provides New Hampshire with many opportunities to put people to work and to bring other benefits to the people of the State. Funds are primarily allocated through existing programs. Information is available at http://www.nh.gov/recovery/


President Huddleston meets with local delegates - 3/30/09

President Huddleston shared breakfast with members of the Manchester delegation at the Puritan Backroom Restaurant to discuss the University's impact on New Hampshire's economy.

 

 



Legislative Breakfast, The Holiday Inn, Concord, New Hampshire - 3/25/09

President Huddleston, along with UNH students and alumni gave members of New Hampshire's General Court a first-hand account of how the University of New Hampshire positively affects the state's economy.

UNH students from each county enjoyed meeting and sitting with their local delegates.

Honoring Peter T. Paul '67

Peter Paul received the UNH Alumni Association's most prestigious award, The Pettee Medal, on Thursday, February 5th, 2009, in the Dimond Library. The Pettee Medal is awarded annually to an alumnus for extraordinary achievement and distinguished service to the state, nation and the world.

UNH Holiday Skating Party - 12/4/08

Students from class HMGT 661 Meeting, Conventions, and Event Management helped plan and execute the annual holiday skating party held for faculty, staff, their families and members of the Durham community.

An estimated 3,000 guests attended the event.
