Why is group work important?

Research has shown that teaching others leads to effective learning of material.

Quiet students are more likely to speak in a small group.

bullet

Students are more likely to ask questions of fellow students when they are confused than they are to ask these questions in class.

bullet

Group work allows students to think about and process material in a way that is different than in a lecture.

 

Suggestions for the Teacher

Explain why learning to work in a group is important.

Establish "rules" for groups early.

bullet

Make tasks clear and well-defined.

bullet

Be sure students know what task is and how to do the task.

bullet

If in-class, listen in to group work, help those who seem lost or confused.

bullet

Make each student responsible for something, so that they are accountable for their actions.

bullet

If possible, have groups report simultaneously, it encourages debate among groups.
