Why is group work important?

Research has shown that teaching others leads to effective learning of material. |
|
|
Quiet students are more likely to speak in a small group. |
|
|
Students are more likely to ask questions of fellow students when they are confused than they are to ask these questions in class. |
|
|
Group work allows students to think about and process material in a way that is different than in a lecture. |
Suggestions for the Teacher
|
|
Explain why learning to work in a group is important. |
|
|
Establish "rules" for groups early. |
|
|
Make tasks clear and well-defined. |
|
|
Be sure students know what task is and how to do the task. |
|
|
If in-class, listen in to group work, help those who seem lost or confused. |
|
|
Make each student responsible for something, so that they are accountable for their actions. |
|
|
If possible, have groups report simultaneously, it encourages debate among groups. |
