In Memoriam: Richard J. Maynard

The University of New Hampshire Department of Music is saddened by the sudden and untimely loss of Richard J. Maynard, a member of our adjunct music faculty. Richard began his distinguished teaching career in 1969 at Merrimack High School as Director of Music. In 1975 he became the award winning Director of Choirs at Manchester High School West where he taught until his retirement in 2004, after 35 years of dedicated teaching and directing.

Richard was a founder of the New Hampshire All State Jazz Festival in 1983. His jazz choirs toured Germany, Austria, and France in 1990 and 1997, and performed in Las Vegas in 1993. He was named Teacher of the Year at Manchester High School West in 1999, and New Hampshire Music Educator of the Year in 2004.Upon his retirement from Manchester High School Richard was employed by the UNH Department of Music as a Supervisor of Student Teachers in Music Education. He was a dedicated and valuable member of our faculty and we will miss his professional expertise and cheerful, upbeat personality.
