The Dept. of Earth Sciences requested funding to restore the historic 1870’s geologic relief map, prepared by former Prof. Charles Hitchcock and his students. The relief map of New Hampshire and Vermont is displayed in James Hall and is the culmination of the first comprehensive geologic survey done in the 1870’s of central New England. The restored 12’ x 16’ relief map will be reinstalled in James Hall in a prominent location. This restoration will be done by UNH students under the direction of a faculty member. Awarded $8,120.00
The Waysmeet Center requested funding to upgrade their kitchen and meeting facilities to better serve the needs of UNH students and others within UNH community who use the center. The funding will expand the facility’s ability to accommodate the growing programs of the center. The Waysmeet Center provides students with service learning opportunities, community dinners, a meeting place where students of different backgrounds interact with each other. Awarded $7,030.00
The Outdoor Adventures Program requested funds to assist in the purchase of equipment and supplies for their mountaineering, ice climbing, and winter program offerings for UNH students. The funding will enable the Outdoor Adventure Program to expand their student programing and lower the rental and trip costs for students. Revenue from the rental program is reinvested in the acquisition and maintenance of their equipment and is used to expand the trip opportunities for students. Awarded $7,300.00
The UNH Library requested funding for additional laptop computers which are available to students while they are working in the library. This request adds to the laptop computer array currently available to students in the library. The laptop loaner program is a well used resource for students, last year the 23 available computers were checked out a total of 14,982 times, for up to 4 hours at a time. Awarded 12,400.00
The UNH Men’s Club Lacrosse Team requested funds to purchase a public address system, video camera and tripod, which will be made available to all the UNH club sport teams. This student initiated grant proposal sought funding for items which team dues and other fund raising could not cover. The public address system will allow the teams to announce players on the field and provide play by play announcing for fans. The video camera will be used to analyze game footage. Awarded $3,460.00
The UNH Judo Club requested funds to buy Judo mats and 2 scoreboards. The new equipment will assist the club not only in their own practice and tournaments but increasing participation in the annual Wildcat Invitational Judo Tournament. This funding complements funding raising done by the club members. Awarded $9,974.00
The Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept. requested funds to help create a new Alternative Energy Lab to facilitate the organization of UNH energy efforts with the efforts of public and private alternative energy groups and projects. It is expected that such a facility will promote energy sustainability on many levels via education, research and sound practices. Awarded $13,000.00
Smith Hall dorm requested funding to create a “Peace Gallery” in one of their lounges in honor of their 100th anniversary. The Gallery will exhibition student work showcasing the history and legacy of Smith Hall’s historically female and international roots. The mission of the displays is to promote peace through the knowledge of “others”. Specific to the request is the purchase of Frames, and LCD Projector and Folding Chairs. Awarded $2,755.00
The Film Underground student organization requested funding to expand the Film Underground DVD collection in the Dimond Library. The collection will continue to focus on a wide range of films including foreign, independent and classic films. This popular film collection was started in 2006 with a grant from the Parents Association and matching funds from Dimond Library. These original DVD films have been loaned out a total of 2,965 times. The funding awarded to expand this program again matches funding being provided by the UNH Library. Awarded $2,500.00
The UNH Equine Program requested funds to purchase its first horse trailer. The purchase of a horse trailer will help to support growing UNH Equine Program and the Therapeutic Riding Program. It will assure that donated horses and sick horses will have transportation to and from UNH and will also allow the Riding Teams to participate in additional competitions during the year. Awarded $20,000.00
The Campus Recreation Athletic Training Dept. requested funding for an Electrotherapy Ultrasound machine to complement existing equipment. This equipment will be used by the Campus Recreation Athletic Trainer in the treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries in students. The additional machine will allow the trainer to treat more injured student athletes simultaneously and efficiently. Awarded $4,085.00
The Undergraduate Research Conference Planning Committee requested funding to increase student support enabling students to present original research during URC. The award also will increase the outreach marketing efforts for the Undergraduate Research Conference and provide support for Friday Symposium, the largest URC event held each year in conjunction with the Undergraduate Research Conference over a two year period. Awarded $40,000.00
The Biology Program requested funding to augment current technology infrastructure and to develop instructional materials. The proposed DVD will highlight the protocols and laboratory exercises which will provide for more interactive teaching and hands-on learning for over 1000 UNH students each year. Awarded $15,500.00
The Center for New England Culture and the UNH-Community Black Heritage Partnerships requested funds for the program called “Building the African American Student Community at UNH: Education, Research and Outreach” which will support student learning. Student involved in this program will participate in 4 on-going regional research projects. The award funding is specific to developing their website for this project. Awarded $3,500.00
The UNH Precision Racing team, which is a student driven project, requested funding for an enclosed trailer and team laptop. This equipment will allow the team to have a permanent means to transport the race car and allow the team to work on the vehicle in bad weather. The laptop computer will allow the team to better tune the car engine and allow the team to organize their data. The team raises approximately $30,000 each year for this project on their own. Awarded $8,000.00
UNH Athletics Dept. requested matching funding for a new Wild-E-Cat mascot costume. The purchase of an additional Wild-E-Cat costume will facilitate the mascot’s participation in additional local and University events. Awarded $2,500.00
