UNH Parents Association 2004 Spring Major Grants



Total amount awarded: $97,021.95

$17,500 • Awarded to the New Hampshire Outing Club to support the replacement of the wilderness cabin on NHOC land in Jackson, New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Outing Club is one of the largest student organizations at UNH and has been part of campus life for over 85 years, promoting experiential learning and recreation opportunities for the UNH community. The original cabin was built in 1942 and is in danger of collapsing. The funding from the Parents Association matches in-kind donations. Other contributions and funding sources include student design, as a Senior Design Project overseen by the UNH Civil Engineering Dept; Gagnon Construction; UNH Thompson School; and Weyerhaeuser-Trus Joist Corp. In addition, the extended membership of the New Hampshire Outing Club will build the cabin. Given full requested funding.

$7,000.00 • Awarded to the Department of Theatre & Dance to fund the international storyteller, Awele Makeba, who will perform “Rage Is Not A 1-Day Thing”. This is a dynamic documentary theatre piece about the untaught history of the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. This is a collaborative effort between the Theatre & Dance Dept., Women’s Studies & the Humanities Program. Over 1,000 students, faculty & staff will be able to participate in this free event. Given full requested funding.

$5,750.00 • Awarded to the Northeast Passage Program of the School of Health & Human Services, Dept. of Recreation Management & Policy. This award will support the training of student leaders in disability awareness in order to improve the atmosphere of inclusion on the UNH campus and support the purchase of 2 wheelchairs which will be made available to a variety of department for visitors, student projects, and research. Given full requested funding. Matching support for this project is provided by Campus Recreation and wheelchair provider Sport Aid.

$8,175.00 • Awarded to the UNH Speech-Language-Hearing Center to establish a lending library of communication disorder videotapes for student and faculty use and for the purchase of a camera and taping system for the new treatment rooms. This is a joint effort between the UNH Speech-Language-Hearing Center and the Dept. of Communication Sciences & Disorders and the Seacoast Child Development Clinic, who are contributing funds for this project as well. It is expected to serve over 2000 students in the Schools of Health & Human Services and Education. Given full requested funding.

$5,500.00 • Awarded to the Civil Engineering Dept. to build a model of the new Kingsbury building and do vibration simulation testing using “smart” fluid dampers. The project is designed to assist in the new Kingsbury construction and be a live laboratory for students. Given full requested funding. The Parents Association funding contributes to other sources of funds for this project.

$10,000.00 • Awarded to Students Without Borders and the Organic Garden Club to engineer the water, power and waste systems for the new UNH organic garden plot. The garden plot will be a model that is economically and environmentally sustainable, all operations are to be coordinated and executed by undergraduate students. The Organic Garden Club is part of the larger UNH Campus-Community Farm working within the Food Agriculture & Society UNH initiative. This award is in addition to cash and in-kind donations already raised by this group. Partially funded.

$2,565.00 • Awarded to the UNH Alternative Break Challenge organization to cover the cost of 2 van rentals and the reservations fees for Habitat for Humanity ABC trips for 2005. This funding helps to reduce the cost to students who pay to volunteer for a Habitat for Humanity project. The UNH ABC organization strives to provide volunteer opportunities for students during their spring break and encourages continued community involvement throughout the year. Given full funding.

$4,624.95 • Awarded to the Sexual Harrassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) to support the purchase of a color network printer. This will allow SHARPP the capability to print short run editions of targeted educational, service oriented and promotional materials to the campus community as needed. This increased technology will facilitate additional outreach efforts. Given full funding.

$3,170.00 • Awarded to the New England Ecological Garden for plant labeling on campus. The plant labeling effort is meant to raise awareness of the value of the campus landscape as an all-encompassing habitat for education and community life and will serve classes in a number of disciplines from environmental horticulture to conservation. Partially funded.

$2,925.00 • Awarded to the Women’s Studies Program for the support of a one day workshop presented by the Museum of African Tribal Art of Portland Maine. This program is a collaborative effort among the Women’s Studies Dept.; Dept. of English Writing Program; American Studies Program; Dept. of Anthropology; and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA). This workshop, led by an Igbo healer from Nigeria and 2 drummers, will consist of a performance event, workshops of drumming and chanting and discussion groups focusing on African masks as ritual and art objects. This workshop is designed to be an event where cultural diversity is celebrated and issues of cultural and racial differences can be studied and discussed. Given full funding.

$2,645.00 • Awarded to Dimond Library to support the purchase of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) for the library. The central location and high volume usage of this building by students, faculty, staff and the community at large makes this building an excellent location for an AED. The Parents Association has provided a number of AED’s for the UNH campus buildings. Given full funding.

$8,200.00 • Awarded to the UNH Sailing Team for the purchase of new, replacement sails and lines for 10 of the boats owned by UNH. The Sailing Team provides recreational and competitive sailing experiences for students. This grant assists the Sailing Team in their fundraising efforts to maintain the Sailing Team’s fleet, their team competitions, and outreach efforts in the areas of teaching basic sailing and water safety skills to local high schools. Given partial funding.

$2,967.00 • Awarded to the UNH Campus Recreation Dept. for the purchase of ice skates to add to the outdoor recreation equipment available for rent to the UNH students and UNH community. This will enhance the use of the open skate times at the Whittemore Center ice arena. Campus Recreation has arranged to purchase the skates at wholesale prices, and low cost rental fees will cover the maintenance and repair of the skates. Given full funding.

$6,000.00 • Awarded to the Department of Communications to replace the instructional equipment used in the advanced undergraduate courses in the “Seminar” room in Horton Hall. This instructional equipment in the heavily scheduled Horton “Seminar” room will be used by Juniors and Seniors in the Communications dept. This is a collaborative funding effort with the Dept. of Communication and the Liberal Arts College Dean’s office, the Parents Association award matches funding already allocated by these departments. Given full funding.

$10,000.00 • Awarded to the UNH Alumni Association to support the creation and installation of a UNH Wildcat Sculpture which will be installed in a prominent location on the UNH campus. It is envisioned that this sculpture will become an identity focal point for the campus and all its constituents from students to alumni. A majority of the funding has already been raised by the Alumni Association, along with various alumni classes and chapters. Given partial funding.
