UNH Parents Association Fall 2008 Discretionary Grant Awards



This round of UNH grants enabled students, faculty and staff to present proposals for funding which are enhancement projects for student learning, safety and program outreach at UNH. The funding for these grants comes from current contributions by UNH Undergraduate Parents. Without this funding, the Parents Association would not be able to run these yearly grant programs which are aimed at providing the UNH community and its students with funding for enhancement programs and projects beyond the academic mission of the University.

Total Awards: $27,197.00

Awarded $2,370.00 - The Student Organization for Health Leadership requested funds for students to attend the ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) Annual Congress in Chicago IL this coming spring. Participating students will be required to serve as community liaisons between the department of Health Management & Policy and the University, sharing what they learned at the conference. Students will also present information from the conference in class presentations and write a reflective essay on the experiences. This funding supplements funds from the department of Health Management & Policy.

Awarded $2,487.00 - The Thompson School of Applied Science Horticulture Technology Program requested funds to develop a lab site, tools and equipment for low voltage lighting so that the Thompson School can develop a landscape lighting course for students. A private company had already donated funds for tools and low voltage lighting fixtures for this class. Installation of the main lighting component will be underwritten by the Thompson School.

Awarded $400.00 - The UNH Black Student Union requested funds to assist them in implementing a Black Family Weekend in the spring of 2009. The weekend will focus on informing and educating the UNH community about the Black Diaspora, while engaging in cultural exchanges through a variety of events during the weekend. This funding supplements additional campus and community funding.

Awarded $283.00 - Holly Harris of the Dept. of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in Murkland hall requested funding to supplement her donations to provide seasonal fresh flower arrangements in the alcove in Murkland Hall outside the main auditorium.

Awarded $1,615.00 - The Dept. of Philosophy requested funds to purchase an LCD projector, disc player and screen for the seminar room in Hamilton Smith Hall. This equipment will enhance teaching classes, by utilizing computer-based presentation and online materials. This equipment will also increase the usage of the room for supplementary activities, such as “Philosophy and a Movie” nights for students. The department has committed to maintaining this equipment.

Awarded $2,500.00 - The UNH Police Dept. requested funding for an additional Segway Personal Transporter to add to the one already in use. The Segways have proved to be an innovative strategy in increasing the presence of and approachability of UNH Police Officers, while giving them more mobility in an environmentally-constructive way. This award represents less than one half the total cost of this equipment; the balance will come from the UNH Police Dept.

Awarded $1,918.00 - The University Writing Program, Online Writing Lab requested funds for a additional tablet laptop computer for the Online Writing Lab project to meet the needs of growing demand. The Online Writing Lab is an extension of the Writing Center, providing writing support through peer tutoring conference for students who can’t come into the Writing Center during regular office ours. The department has committed to maintaining this equipment.

Awarded $1,200.00 - Alpha Phi Omega, a non-profit, national co-ed community service fraternity requested funds to assist them in attending the APO National Convention in Boston. The goal of attending the conference is to meet with other APO members from across the country and discuss best practices and ideas which will be brought back to UNH in an effort to expand their community service programs. This funding supplements the delegates’ personal expenses.

Awarded $775.00 - The UNH Figure Skating Team requested funds to help them organize and advertise their annual National Competition Send-off Show for the UNH students and other area residents. This event showcases the team’s new performance and also serves as a fundraiser for the team. This funding supplements personal team member expenses toward the Team’s annual expenses.

Awarded $2,300.00 - The UNH Martin Luther King Celebration Events Planning Committee requested funds to help implement the MLK Celebration at UNH which will feature 5 main events. These events will promote intellectual development, diversity of perspectives, experiences and cultures for students and the community. This year’s MLK Celebration is a collaboration of 16 departments and 7 community organizations. www.unh.edu/diversity/mlk_celebration2009.html

Awarded $2,252.00 - The UNH SHARPP Office requested funding to create a series of 4 posters to be used for a media campaign aimed at teaching students how to respond to disclosures of sexual and relationship abuse to the UNH Community. This initiative is in response to a recent SHARPP survey. This funding supplements other UNH dept. funding and in-kind services.

Awarded $1,610.00 - The Society of Automotive Engineers Aero is requesting funding assistance in building and competing an innovative model airplane. This national competition for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will require students to integrate engineering disciplines to design and build a maneuverable aircraft capable of carrying a large load. This funding supplements departmental funding and private fundraising by the Aero team.

Awarded $2,500.00 - UNH Sport Clubs and Intramural Sports programs requested funds to purchase a digital video camera and laptop computer for filming and posting sporting events on the campus recreation website. Having more sporting club video clips online will make the Intramural Clubs’ experiences more available to families and friends of UNH. This equipment will also be used by the intramural department. The balance of the funding needed for this project will be raised by Campus Recreation.

Awarded $1,960.00 - UNH Campus Recreation requested funds to purchase winter jackets for student leaders and student employees while working or managing events for Campus Recreation. The jackets are being purchased through the manufacture’s discount program with additional funds being provided by Sport Club funding.

Awarded $527.00 - The UNH Peace & Justice League, sponsoring the Mindfulness Meditation group, requested funds to purchase meditation cushions to be used at the Waysmeet Center. The meditation group is committed to make programs of mindfulness, relaxation, rest and restoration available to students across the campus; it is an increasingly popular program on campus.

Awarded $2500.00 - The UNH Energy Club is requesting funding to purchase computer equipment to enable them to operate the club and develop their Seminar Series. This new student organization has active support from 13 energy- based companies in New Hampshire. www.unhenergyclub.com
