Transportation Options Make Getting Around Easy


Amtrak’s Downeaster train stops at the UNH campus in Durham on its way north to Portland, Maine, or south to Boston’s North Station and points in between, making five round trips daily.  Many multi-ride pass options are available for students: Monthly Commuter Pass, Ten-Ride Pass (good for 45 days), College 6TIX Pass (good for one year with a college ID). Groups of 20 or more get a 15 percent discount.  All the Downeaster trains feature free wireless Internet service.

The Downeaster even offers Sports Packages. Does your student want to take in a Bruins or Celtics game?  The Downeaster drops passengers off right at the TD Garden. Packages include game tickets and round-trip transportation. Visit www.AmtrakDowneaster.com   

Zipcar offers the convenience of a car on campus without the hassles of ownership.  Join for only $25 and get $35 worth of free driving. Visit www.zipcar.com/unh, or call (866) 494-7227. Students get 24/7 access to Zipcars parked on campus. Students just need to reserve online, let themselves in with their Zipcard, and drive. The low hourly and daily rates include gas and insurance.
Students need to be at least 18 to join. Members ages 18 to 20 can use a dedicated group of Zipcars that live on campus. Members 21 and older also have access to thousands of Zipcars all around the world.  Gift cards are available at www.zipcar.com/gift/

C&J operates buses with stops at Durham, Dover, and Portsmouth, connecting with Newburyport, Mass.; and Logan Airport and South Station in Boston.  Buses also make daily trips to New York City.  Multi ride passes to Boston are available.  Call (800) 258-7111 or (603) 430-1100.  Free wireless web access is available on all C&J buses. COAST Bus provides transportation from the Dover Transportation Center to Portsmouth, Newington, Somersworth, and Rochester, N.H.  COAST also connects Exeter Station to Stratham, Portsmouth, and Newington, N.H. and other New Hampshire communities.  UNH students with their student ID ride at no charge on all COAST routes. In Durham, Wildcat Transit / Campus Connector provides connections from the Durham Station to Dover, Newington, Newmarket, and Portsmouth, N.H.  Wildcat Transit also services the UNH campus.  Students, faculty, and staff with a valid UNH ID ride for free.  Students can sign up for an email subscription to keep informed about delays, detours, and routes.  When school is not in session, there are periods of reduced or no service. General public fares of $1.50 are charged for specific routes.  One- and three-month passes are available for general public riders. COAST monthly passes and one-ride tickets are accepted on all Wildcat Transit routes.

Student Transportation for Extenuating Circumstances

Students who use UNH alternate transportation programs such as Wildcat Transit, or who carpool or vanpool, or who are involved in RideShare are provided with Guaranteed Ride Home assurance.  If an emergency comes up and a student doesn’t have his or her car on campus, he or she can request an emergency ride home, free of charge.  Students may schedule up to two emergency rides per semester.   Students must be registered for the Guaranteed Ride Home service in order to request a ride.  Call (603) 862-2328 to register.  The service is available Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding holidays and curtailed operations.  

UNH also operates Safe Rides, a program for students who need a sober ride home.  Safe Rides operates on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m.  There is no charge for this service – it is supported by the UNH Transportation fee.  Call (603) 365-6406.
