PI/PD Responsibilities for Sponsored Projects

k. Budget Balances and Expense Deficits

Even the most experienced PI/PD will be unable to spend every penny of the awarded budget.

If there is a large budget balance available at or near the project end date and there is work remaining to be done, the PI/PD may ask the sponsor to extend the end date. (See “Extending a Project Beyond the Original End Date.”) If there is a budget balance available at the end of the project period, UNH will return it to the sponsor or relinquish our right to draw down the remaining funds.

If there is a deficit in the project budget balance available, the PI/PD is responsible for promptly removing that deficit, with the help of the BSC. The deficit may not be covered with funds from another UNH sponsored project.
