College of Life Sciences and Agriculture

The College of Life Sciences and Agriculture provides students with specific instruction in major fields related to understanding biological processes, agricultural sciences, and the management of natural resources. Students may also combine a major with the dual major in international affairs.

You need to print out your COLSA worksheet prior to attending June Orientation.

Choosing First-Semester Courses

The specific requirements of the first semester COLSA programs are listed below. Note that in most cases there are one or two general education requirements (gen eds) to be chosen. Since the availability of English 401 is limited to half the first-year class first semester, make sure you have chosen alternative gen eds. You should give serious consideration to selection of gen eds before you attend Orientation.
It is expected that you will review the current Undergraduate Catalog at www.undergradcat.unh.edu and the general education and writing requirements at www.undergradcat.unh.edu/webreq.html and then choose four courses in which you are interested. Your final choice of gen eds will be made after consultation with your academic adviser at Orientation.
A normal course load is 16 credits, usually consisting of four 4-credit courses. First-year students usually take courses numbered in the 400s and 500s.

IMPORTANT MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT TEST INFORMATION

First-year students arrive at UNH with a wide range of mathematics preparation. It is important that you begin your UNH experience in the mathematics course that is right for you. For that reason, EVERY INCOMING COLSA STUDENT MUST TAKE A MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT TEST AT JUNE ORIENTATION. Based on the results of that test, you will be placed in either MATH 418, Analysis and Applications Functions, or MATH 425, Calculus I, or a gen ed (groups 4-8). More information about the placement test is available on the Mathematics Department Web site, www.math.unh.edu, as well as at www.math.unh.edu/placement; also, a short practice test can be found at www.unh.edu/mac/math/practice-test. If you do not attend orientation, you will have the opportunity to take the placement test on the first day of classes in the fall.
