Declaring a Major

Many students choose CEPS as their college because mathematics and science are their favorite subjects in high school, even though they are unsure about their choice of a major. In this case we advise you to enroll as Undeclared. As such, you will be advised by the Associate Dean in the college and will enroll in a course (TECH 400: Introduction to the CEPS Programs) that meetstwice a week for a total of three hours and provides an overview of the career opportunities and programs of study offered by each of the college’s nine departments. Although TECH 400 is required for undeclared majors in CEPS, we advise any student to take this course to explore other majors or to confirm their interest in the major they have chosen.

Every incoming CEPS student must take the Mathematics Placement Test

What is the Mathematics Placement Test?
The test is a 40-question multiple-choice test covering topics from algebra and pre-calculus.  Calculator use is not allowed on the test.

Who has to take the test, and when is it given?
Students are provided two separate opportunities to take the test and place into MATH 425 Calculus I:

  1. Online Mathematics Evaluation: Every incoming CEPS student is asked to complete an online Mathematics evaluation prior to coming to their June Orientation session. This online evaluation is the foundation upon which their first semester schedule is created prior to their arrival. Information on how to access this test is provided here.
  2. Proctored Placement Exam in September: Students who did not place into MATH 425 with the online Math Evaluation prior to Orientation will be given another opportunity to take the placement test the first Tuesday of the Fall Semester. If they place into MATH 425, at that time their schedule will be adjusted within the week.

Where can I find about the Mathematics Placement Test?                                                          Review information about the test and click on MATH 425 Placement Test Information. Try the short online practice test.

Choosing First-Semester Courses

A sample selection of courses is listed below for each major. In every case there is an opportunity for choosing some Discovery courses that satisfy the University’s Discovery Program (core university curriculum) requirements. Unless you receive AP English credit, you will be required to take First-Year Writing (ENGL 401) in your first year. If ENGL 401 is listed with your major, you will take it in your first semester; otherwise, you will take ENGL 401 in your second semester (see recommended list of courses below.

A semester course load usually consists of four 4-credit courses and possibly a 1-credit seminar. First year students usually take courses numbered in the 400s and 500s.

Taking French or Spanish Fall Sesmeter?

You must complete an online placement test before your June orientation: Go to the French and Spanish Online Placement. your advisor will have your result at June orientation.

Orientation Worksheet

You must print out your CEPS worksheet prior to attending June Orientation. Use the information above to assist you in completing the form.

Becoming a part of the CEPS community

You will have several classes with other students in your major. You may want to form study groups or join a club associated with your major. Many departments have a study lounge and a computer cluster specifically reserved for their majors. Most departments have honor societies that offer student-run tutoring. Finally, you will have a faculty advisor in your major who can serve as a mentor. Please see your adviser and take advantage of these opportunities as quickly as possible to make your connection to the CEPS community.
