FREE CONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS: The College Access, Leadership, & Empowerment Conference

This conference is for any high school or college student from underrepresented racial or ethnic group and their allies who want to make a positive impact in their academic communities. The is a peer to peer conference designed to showcase a wide array of sessions and topics over a day-long event populated by enriching activities designed to motivate, empower, inform and transform the lives of hundreds of students navigating their respective educational systems. This conference is brought to you by the NH Multicultural Student Affairs Consortium (NHMSAC) and co-sponsored by a dozen different colleges and universities in the state, in collaboration with the NH Office of Minority Health & Refugee Affairs, Campus Compact for New Hampshire, and the New Hampshire College & University Council. EVENT SERIES: 3rd Annual UNH Gender Identity Awareness Week (GIA)!
November 12 - 16, 2012
GIA is a week of events dedicated to promoting an understanding of transgender, transsexual and gender queer issues at UNH and beyond. Started in 2010, our annual GIA Week features film screenings, a panel of speakers, open mic, our annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, and other events to bring together UNH students, faculty, and staff and community members to have substantive discussions about gender identity/expression, gender diversity, social justice and cultural transformation. In addition to fostering dialogue and providing education, GIA hopes to stimulate positive changes on campus and in the community, promote activism and provide fun and social opportunities for Trans and allied people. All are welcome and all events are free and open to the public.

Film Screening and Discussion: Photos of Angie (Gender Identity Awareness Week Event)

This moving and powerful documentary chronicles the life and murder of Angie Zapata -- a transgender teen who was murdered in rural Colorado in 2008. The film includes extensive interviews with her family about her journey of self-discovery, transgender lives across the globe, hate crimes legislation, and the mysterious nature of her killer -- all against the backdrop of his trial. The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film and the Zapata case, as well as hatred and violence against transgender people.

 

Transgender Day of Remembrance (T-DOR) Speak-Out, Vigil and Reception (Gender Identity Awareness Week Event)
Tuesday, November 13, 2012
7:30 – 9:30pm, MUB Theatre II, Union Oval, MUB 338-340

The T-DOR is an annual, international event that memorializes those who have died due to anti-transgender hatred and violence in the previous year. Join us for a program in MUB Theatre II, a candlelight vigil in front of the MUB, and a reception in MUB 338-340 to remember the trans people we have lost due to bigotry and hate.

 

Film Screening and Discussion: Austin Unbound (Gender Identity Awareness Week Event)
Wednesday, November 14, 2012
4:00 - 5:30pm, MUB Theatre II

Deaf trans man Austin, has struggled with feeling burdened by his female anatomy all his life. The film follows Austin and his best friend on a road trip to finally undergo a double-mastectomy. Unbound at last, Austin is eager to get on with life. His journey is an inspiration to his community and beyond as he shares his intimate insights with self-awareness and humor. Austin’s Deaf experience is portrayed in cinematic effect. The film screening will be followed by an in-depth discussion about the intersections of deaf culture, disability and trans identity.

Join us to hear from transgender individuals about the experiences of the intersections of multiple identities including race, ethnicity, class, and disability. Bring your questions!

 

Cisgender Privilege Workshop (Gender Identity Awareness Week Event)

Have you ever thought about the role of gender in your life? How have stereotypes like all girls love pink and all boys love sports impacted you? What would life be like without gender roles? What would your life have been like if your identity fell outside of the two options of man and woman? Join us for activities and discussion about gender identities, transgender identities, and gender dynamics.

 

LGBTQ Open Mic and Social Justice Poetry Jam (Gender Identity Awareness Week Event)

A chance for people of all identities to perform and bare themselves on stage about issues concerning gender, race, and social justice. Play some music, read a poem, dance, or just let it all out in a space where you can express yourself freely.
