The SPEAC
(Students Promoting, Education and Awareness on Campus) program,
formerly Peer Education, is designed to increase knowledge and understanding about issues that directly affect the lives of college students. SPEAC is based on the belief that students learn more and are more receptive when they are taught by their peers about issues/topics they have personal interest in.
The Diversity SPEAC
Student Group works to initiate growth and positive change in
our UNH community and beyond. We will explore the dynamics of
power and privilege, discrimination and prejudice, inclusion and
equity through the multiple identities of race, gender, sexual
orientation, class, nationality, ability, ethnicity, religion,
etc. For this academic year there will be two program areas to choose from:
Safe Zones: UNH Safe Zones is an educational program that encourages dialogue about issues and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals, and to build a campus-wide network of allies who are supportive of LGBTQ students, faculty and staff and are committed to contributing to a campus climate of inclusion at UNH. Student facilitators have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, strengthen their own knowledge of experiences of LGBTQ and Ally individuals, develop skills in program development and facilitation, and actively engage students, faculty and staff in important dialogue to further personal and institutional change.
Does Race Matter at UNH?: This program provides a racially diverse group of students the opportunity to look at racial identities and their role and impact in our UNH community and beyond. First semester will be spent exploring and unpacking our own and very personal racial identities and awareness from the earliest stages up to our most current experiences. We will have the opportunity to engage in group discussions, and also uncover challenging racial perceptions through experiential exercises, readings and guest speakers. Second semester we will share our revelations and experiences via panel discussions throughout campus as well as off campus.
