International Student Employment Guide for UNH Departments

If you offer an assistantship to either an incoming or current UNH student, please be sure to copy the OISS on the offer letter, as the award needs to be indicated on any immigration documents issued by the office.

If you wish to hire an incoming student...

1) If the student is already in the U.S. in valid student status at another institution , and will be attending UNH the next academic term, it is possible for the student to work at either campus between semesters if the transfer process is properly coordinated between schools. Contact the OISS for additional information.

2) If the student is already in the U.S. in non-student status , he or she must make an application to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly known as the INS) and receive approval of a change of status to either F-1 or J-1 classification prior to beginning employment. The OISS assists students with this process and submits the applications to the USCIS on the students' behalf.

3) Graduate students who wish to begin on-campus employment earlier than the semester of their admission should consult OISS staff for appropriate procedures.

If you wish to hire a current UNH student...

1) Students who are finishing one program and entering a new program the following semester must receive a new I-20 or DS-2019 and written authorization (where applicable) PRIOR to beginning employment. This applies even if the employment is a continuation of a previous appointment. For example, if a student is completing a MS in May and will begin the Ph.D. program the following September, he or she must receive a new I-20/DS-2019 from the OISS prior to their completion date in order to assure uninterrupted employment.

2) Students who are finishing their program and will not be starting another must apply for employment authorization from either the USCIS (F-1 students) or their program sponsor (J-1 students). Employment cannot begin (or continue past the program completion date) until such authorization has been granted.
