Research Emphasis

Throughout his NOAA career, Captain Armstrong has specialized in hydrographic surveying, serving on several NOAA hydrographic ships, including NOAA Ship Whiting as Commanding Officer. Before becoming the NOAA Co-Director of the Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire, he was Chief of NOAA's Hydrographic Surveys Division, managing the agency's operational hydrographic programs. Capt. Armstrong manages the ocean mapping education program at CCOM/JHC. He is active in the Center's development of improved techniques and technology for nautical charting, and with the research and seabed mapping associated with potential extended U.S. continental shelf claims under Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
