A little background... |
|---|---|
In August of 1976, an assertive and particularly frustrated adult student organized a meeting of students and University staff to discuss the growing numbers of older undergraduate students at UNH, and some of the difficulties that they were experiencing. It was the first time that the students in that group had come together to discuss their common concerns and experiences; at that meeting they learned they were not alone. That marked the beginning if a long journey with many starts, stops, diversions, and road blocks- in all a pretty bumpy ride. But it has finally brought us to Room 112 in the MUB, and it only took us 19 years! |

The original group grew as more staff joined in an expression of their support of the population. Believing that "a place" was their primary need, we began scouting about the campus for empty space and to develop a rationale for why it should be designated for the students use. In 1982 it was confirmed that a tiny house on Rosemary lane, recently acquired by the university would be designated as the Non-Traditional Student Center. It was called Underwood House and for four years it provided opportunities for meeting, studying, last minute typing of papers, eating relaxing and gathering. There was a coordinator for the house and its programs. |
But in 1987 the building was bulldozed to make room for the new health center. The group was moved to Pettee House, and the services were gradually pared down to nearly nothing over the next several years. |
In 1992, with some encouragement from the administration, the non-traditional students became active in the discussion for the MUB renovations. "Stay the course" was the advice form T-Hall and they did, attending numerous hearings and meetings when they probably should have been studying. |

Today the students have a lounge; the organization has its office. In many ways it seems like only a bit of progress. In truth it's a lot, thanks to a long line of committed, persistent, sometimes dogged students. Their efforts paid off; you are the beneficiaries. Many thanks to all of them. Please enjoy the accomplishments of those who preceded you and work to maintain the considerable progress they achieved. |
