National Student Exchange
NSE The National Student Exchange is a consortium of almost 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States, US territories, and Canada.  Through this academic program, students continue to make progress toward their UNH degree while studying at another location. After a semester or year on exchange, students return to their home campus to complete their remaining degree requirements and graduate.

If it is time to expand your curriculum, develop more independence, explore new interest, study with new faculty, hear different ideas, make new friends, or create new opportunities, then widen your horizons through the National Student Exchange.

If you are considering UNH as an NSE/NHCUC exchange location or have been accepted for exchange for 2008-2009, visit our incoming student site.

Courses, Grades, and Credits

Monica Q at Univ. of ArizonaAll courses are pre-approved prior to leaving UNH. The NSE transfer credit form denotes how many credits will be accepted and the specific requirement each course satisfies. General education, major, minor, and elective courses may be taken.  Exchange courses are listed on the UNH transcript with grades and the number of credits, however, they do not affect the UNH cumulative grade point average. Registration in EXCH 595 maintains UNH student status for financial aid, registration after exchange, and protects on campus housing.

$125.00 non-refundable application fee, due by February 27, 2009.  Then, students are charged $100.00 per semester UNH exchange fee (added to tuition bill).  Other UNH fees may be waived.  UNH is a "Plan B only" member of the National Student Exchange. Tuition and mandatory fees are paid to UNH.  Room and board are paid to the host campus.  Special fees, such as those with labs or orientation, are paid to the host campus. Check costs at the campus you are considering with the exchange coordinator.  Financial Aid continues to be applied for and received from UNH.  Transportation costs are paid by the student.

Note on Spring 2009:
While the deadline for all of 2008-2009 exchanges was last March, there are a few campuses willing to consider your application for spring 2009.  If you are interested in exploring this option, please send an email to the UNH NSE Coordinator, listing the following info:  Your name, year, major, and some of the campuses or areas you would like to consider.  Please note, however, that every day that passes means fewer and fewer options for spring exchange through NSE.  Final deadline: October 1, 2008.

How to Apply for National Exchange
1.  Stop by the National Student Exchange Office, 114 Hood House, to obtain a NSE directory describing all exchange campuses, or visit www.nse.org to conduct a search of participating schools.  This site allows you to search by major or areas of interest.
2.  Research & select five or six campuses that meet your academic and personal goals. (Remember that UNH is Plan B only so your list should include schools with Plan B "OPEN" or "UNEVEN".)
3.  Look through websites and catalogs of your top choices, concentrating on courses you need for your major or minor.  If they are not available, ask yourself if you could spend a semester away without major courses, taking general education or elective classes, and still graduate on time.
4.  WSBE students must check that their HOST school is accredited by AACSB.  Other majors may need to check with their academic advisor for accreditation requirements.
5.  Make an appointment to talk with the exchange coordinator to discuss your campus choices and goals for exchange.  You will be given an application at this time.

6.  Complete the exchange application including all signatures, Conduct Reference Form, unofficial transcript, and essay.
7.  Submit your completed application with the $125.00 non-refundable application fee (payable to UNH) on or BEFORE  FEB. 27, 2009.  After that date, the number of schools with openings significantly decreases.  Set up an appointment to discuss options if you are still interested in an exchange for fall or spring next year.
