The formal presentation of one's work at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia consists of three tasks:
1. Submission of an electronic abstract to conferences@unh.edu;
2. Submission of the written paper to conferences@unh.edu; and
3. Presentation at the Paper Session (orally) OR presentation at the Poster Session.
Students who wish to present papers on original scientific, engineering, or
mathematics research that they have conducted are asked to submit an abstract
electronically to conferences@unh.edu and mail their student nomination/abstract
submission form by
JSHS Symposium
Stillings Hall, Room G55
Each participant must designate on the abstract the specific discipline and sub-discipline of the research; these include:
Earth and Space Science, including astronomy, environmental science, geology, marine science, meteorology.
Physical Sciences and Technology, including chemistry, energy, engineering, and physics
Behavioral Science
Mathematics and Computer Science
Biological Sciences, including biochemistry, general biology, forestry, medicine and health, microbiology, and physiology
Judging: The NNE and SNE symposia will be judged separately. Our objective is to ensure an equitable competition by selecting qualified judges and by communicating the rules of competition to both students and judges. A panel of UNH faculty judges, along with the Symposium Director, will review all submitted research papers, meet to discuss the merits of each paper, and select which students are to present orally at the NNE-JSHS and the SNE-JSHS symposia. Students who are not selected to present at the Paper Session are extended an invitation to present their research in the Poster Session. The same judges who reviewed the research papers will act as judges for the selection of winners of the oral presentations.
Team projects: Students should report on their individual contributions to research. If students are part of a larger group project, the presentation should focus again on the individual contributions in the larger research project and properly acknowledge the contributions of other students, mentors, and/or teachers. For those team projects that cannot be divided into individual research projects, a team leader should be selected to present the results of the group project. In this case, all JSHS directives applying to individual projects will apply to group projects. In the event the group presenter of the winning regional group is unable to present at the National level, this opportunity will be passed on to the next ranking project, not to another member of the original winning group. This decision is made since the judge’s evaluations and scores pertain to the individual presenter. Scholarships are awarded to only one student. Student presenters who are part of a team must notify JSHS of which student will receive scholarship funding should the team presentation earn regional or national awards.
Rejection of papers and Resubmission of papers from a previous year: The Symposium Director reserves the right to reject papers if instructions are not followed. Papers that are resubmitted from a previous year must be substantially advanced or they will not be considered for presentation.
