Submitting Research Papers to NNE-JSHS and SNE-JSHS

The formal presentation of one's research at the Junior Science and Humanities Symposia consists of three tasks:

1. Submission of an electronic abstract to conferences@unh.edu;

2. Submission of an electronic version of the research paper to conferences@unh.edu; and

3. Presentation of selected papers at the Paper Session (orally) OR presentation as at the Poster Session.

Teachers, guidance counselors and principals nominate students to attend the symposium. The Nomination forms, along with the students abstracts for their research are due by January 20, 2012. Selected students submit an electronic version of their research papers on original research they have done in the fields of scientific, technology, engineering, or mathematics. If you are selected to submit a paper, then an electronic version of your completed paper must be received no later than February 17, 2012. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the link on the left menu options on this web page. Please email research papers to conferences@unh.edu.

Each participant must designate on the abstract the specific discipline and sub-discipline of the research; these include:

·         Environmental Science (Climatology, Weather, Ecosystems)

·         Engineering, Technology (Solar, Robotics)

·         Physics & Astronomy (Theoretical Mathematics)

·         Life Sciences (Molecular & Cellular Biology/Biochemistry)

·         Medicine and Health/Behavioral Sciences

·         Mathematics and Computer Science

·         Chemistry (Geochemistry)

Categories are subject to change slightly from year to year.

Judging: The NNE-JSHS and the SNE-JSHS regions will be judged separately. Our objective is to ensure an equitable competition by selecting qualified judges and by communicating the rules of competition to both students and judges. A panel of UNH faculty judges, along with the Symposium Director, will review all submitted research papers, meet to discuss the merits of each paper, and select which students are to present orally at the NNE-JSHS or the SNE-JSHS regional sessions. Students who are not selected to present at the Paper Session are extended an invitation to present their research in the Poster Session. Judges are selected by the director of the NNE and SNE regions. All decisions of the judges are final.

Team projects: Students should report on their individual contributions to the research project. If students are part of a larger group project, the presentation should focus again on the individual contributions in the larger research project and properly acknowledge the contributions of other students, mentors, and/or teachers. For those team projects that cannot be divided into individual research projects, a team leader should be selected to present the results of the group project. In this case, all JSHS directives applying to individual projects will apply to group projects. In the event the group presenter of the winning regional group is unable to present at the National level, this opportunity will be passed on to the next ranking project, not to another member of the original winning group. This decision is made since the judge’s evaluations and scores pertain to the individual presenter. Scholarships are awarded to only one student and follow all rules set forth by the Academy of Applied Science and the sponsoring branches of the military.

Rejection of papers and Resubmission of papers from a previous year: The Symposium Director reserves the right to reject papers if instructions are not followed. Papers that are resubmitted from a previous year must be substantially advanced or they will not be considered for presentation.
