How Do I Participate?

Early in the fall, announcements of the Northern New England JSHS Symposium are mailed to high schools in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Announcements of the Southern New England JSHS Symposium are mailed to high schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Northern New England and Southern New England symposia are being held at one location this year and the judging will be done separately for each symposium.

Nominations:

Each school may nominate up to five (5) students. A science, humanities or math teacher from each school must accompany the students to the symposium.

Serious students in grades 9 to 12* who have demonstrated interest in the sciences, engineering or mathematics are eligible to participate in the regional symposia. We invite all high school students who complete a research project in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics to submit a paper on their original research for presentation as a talk or a poster at the symposium.

To encourage interest in scientific and engineering research, we also welcome the nomination of freshman, sophomore, and junior high school students without research projects to attend the symposium.

* To be eligible, grade 12 students must offer to present a paper at the Symposium.

A panel of judges will review all papers submitted and select at least five students to orally present the results of their research to the regional symposium audience at the Paper Session. Judging during the oral presentations will determine the first and second place top finalists who will make a presentation at the national symposium.

The student authors of the remaining papers will be invited to present their research at a Poster Session where they will be able to discuss their papers with their peers, teachers and the judges in a more informal setting.

Students who are nominated to attend should give assurance that they will be present for the entire Symposium.

Students who are nominated should have sufficient integrity to merit their teacher's trust and confidence so that they will reflect credit to their school and to the University.

The general Program Outline will be posted on this web site as soon as it becomes available.
