Our Mission

The New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire provides professional expertise and laboratory facilities that allow prompt  diagnosis of animal diseases of public health and economic importance to the state.

History

The New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (NHVDL) was established by the NH Legislature in 1969 to assist the NH Commissioner of Agriculture and State Veterinarian in their efforts to monitor and control important animal diseases and to contribute to the academic, research and outreach missions of the University.  The NHVDL provides diagnostic services and information to various state agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, NH Fish and Game Department, and state and local law enforcement agencies.  Diagnostic pathology services are also available to practicing veterinarians and their clients.  In recent years, the NHVDL has participated in the increased surveillance by state and federal agencies of certain animal diseases associated with international trade and bioterrorism.

General Information

Hours of Operation

The diagnostic laboratory is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Specimens can be delivered in person or via US mail or commercial carrier.

Submission of Specimens

Specimens must be submitted to the NHVDL by a practicing veterinarian, state or local regulatory official, or a state extension agent.  Poultry specimens may be submitted by animal owners with prior approval by the diagnostic laboratory.

For questions about submission of specimens, appropriate sample selection and preservation and shipping requirements, call the lab at:  Tel: 603-862-2726

Reporting Results

Results of tests or examinations are reported only to the referring veterinarian or regulatory officials.  Results of most tests are reported by phone or fax immediately upon completion.  Typed reports are then sent by US mail.

The NHVDL is required to report diagnoses of certain infectious disease directly to state and/or federal regulatory officials.  Referring veterinarians will be notified when reports to regulatory officials are made.
