Editors and News Directors: Following this release is a schedule of
stops that includes estimated times of presentations. You are welcome
to cover any of them.
DURHAM, N.H. -- University of New Hampshire President Ann Weaver Hart
will show new faculty members and administrators how the university impacts
the Granite State through its teaching, research and outreach during a
statewide tour next week.
The trip begins Thursday, May 29, and ends late Saturday afternoon,
May 31.
"From the Seacoast and the Great North Woods to the Lakes Region
and I-93 corridor, the university is engaged in extensive teaching and
research ," Hart says. "This tour allows us to introduce our
new faculty to the state and help foster in them a passion to link their
impressive academic backgrounds directly to the opportunities available
in New Hampshire that so many of their colleagues already enjoy.
"Through our mission of outreach to the state, UNH provides a wealth
of opportunities to current and future students engaged in all areas of
the state. By exposing new faculty to this tradition, we hope to inspire
them to expand our mission of public service to the state in new and creative
ways," she says.
Twenty-three faculty members will board the bus Thursday, May 29, for
the three-day trip. The bus departs UNH at 7:15 a.m. Thursday for the
New Castle Coast Guard Pier. At the pier, Hunt Howell, professor of zoology,
will discuss the background of the pier and its importance to UNH research.
Pingguo He, research associate professor and UNH Cooperative Extension
specialist on fishing gear technology, will talk about the university's
involvement in Portsmouth's fishing industry.
The tour will stop mid-morning at Prescott Park in Portsmouth. For many
years, students, through their work at the UNH Greenhouses, have supported
the park with plant growing assistance.
At noon, the tour visits UNH-Manchester where Robert Macieski, associate
professor of history, will discuss the history of the Manchester mills.
The stop at UNH-Manchester is followed by a visit to the Union Leader,
which employs several UNH alumni, and the N.H. International Speedway
in Loudon, which regularly works with UNH interns.
The final stop of the day is Patrick's Pub in Gilford where tour participants
will hear a presentation about the UNH Cooperative Extension's food safety
program, and how it has helped the pub and its staff.
Following a night at the Inn at Mills Falls in Meredith, the tour visits
the Lakes Region Correctional Facility in Laconia, where nearly 100 inmates
are involved in The Family Connections Project. A partnership among UNH's
Department of Family Studies, the UNH Cooperative Extension Family and
Youth Development program, and the N.H. Department of Corrections, the
project was created to help fill a gap in the corrections field -- helping
families.
The next two stops at Heritage N.H. in Glen and the Mt. Washington Hotel
in Bretton Woods highlight how UNH alumni contribute to the economy of
the state through entrepreneurial activities.
At Chutters Candy Store in Littleton, faculty will learn about UNH's
efforts with small business development in the North Country.
Friday evening, faculty and administrators will lodge at The Balsams
Resort in Dixville Notch. The Balsams and UNH have worked together extensively
for decades, including on black fly research and hospitality management.
The Balsams also hosts a lecture series featuring members of the UNH Speakers
Bureau.
The following morning, they depart for Branch Hill Farm in Milton Mills,
which has had a long-standing relationship with UNH's forestry programs.
