DURHAM, N.H. -- A nine-day writing institute providing teachers with in-depth training in unique art-and-literature-based processes designed to improve student writing will be offered by the University of New Hampshire's Laboratory for Interactive Learning in July.

Picturing Writing: Fostering Literacy Through Art and Image Making Within the Writing Process are proven by research to dramatically improve student writing. By giving students access to visual and kinesthetic modes of thinking at each and every stage of the writing
process, these programs provide an important pathway into writing for children with diverse learning styles. This institute will present teachers with a model for integrating Picturing Writing and Image-Making into the science and social studies curriculum.

The institute will take place July 7-11 and 14-17, 2003, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $1,075 per participant. Elementary classroom teachers, art, reading and special education specialists are encouraged to attend. Deadline to register is May 30, 2003.
