DURHAM, N.H. ‚ David Finkelhor, professor of sociology and director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, has been appointed to Cardinal Bernard Law's new Commission for the Protection of Children.
Finkelhor, a nationally recognized expert who has published extensively in the field of child abuse treatment, prevention and developmental victimology, will join 14 other clinicians, educators and child advocacy experts on the commission. He currently serves on the Youth Protection Advisory Board for the Boy Scouts of America and was a consultant to the National Catholic Risk Retention Group in developing abuse prevention strategies for Catholic dioceses around the country.
The commission was established by Law "to help us to immediately critique and improve our Archdiocesan policies and programs, and to work long term to examine the feasibility of the creation of an independent center for policy development and consultation regarding the prevention of the sexual abuse of children."
Finkelhor's work on the commission also will include critiquing the Archdiocese's current policies at all levels; offering counsel regarding psychological screening and ongoing human formation of candidates for the priesthood; offering counsel on ways to enhance the outreach to victims and their families; and advising on ways to enhance the outreach and spiritual care to parishes and schools most affected.
