Summer Activities and Programs at UNH

DURHAM -- If you're wondering what to do with some free time this summer, consider some of the activities and programs sponsored by the University of New Hampshire.

For Adults:

Continuing Education: The following are some of the newer noncredit courses and a few of the traditional favorites. For information, call the Division of Continuing Education, 862-2069, or go to Web site www.learn.unh.edu.

Thursdays, June 1-July 6: Upholstery Workshop for Beginners. Bring a small chair or ottoman to work on. 6:10-9:10 p.m.

Thursdays, June 1-29: Camera Basics: The First Step in Good Photography. Functions of a 35 mm single lens reflex camera. 6:40 to 9:40 p.m.

Saturdays, June 3-17: Drawing at the Seashore. Group and individual instruction, charcoal and pastels. Odiorne State Park, 9 a.m. to noon.

Tuesdays, June 13-27: Herbs for Stress Relief. Learn how to make teas, tinctures, salves and mists. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Tuesdays, June 20-27: Introduction to Landscape Photography. Equipment, types of film, composition. Includes field trip Saturday, June 24. 9 a.m. to noon.

Wednesdays, June 28-July 12: Jazz and the Attentive Listener. Gain a deeper insight into this classic American art form. Includes the Seacoast Jazz Festival. 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuesdays, July 11-Aug. 15: Portrait Painting in Oil. Principles of color, fleshtones and lighting in oil portraiture. 6:10 to 9:10 p.m.

July 15-16 and July 29-30: Kayaking Basics. Classroom instruction with pond or pool session Saturday, open sea instruction Sunday. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Thursday, July 20-Aug. 10: Garden Flower Design. Gather, condition and arrange garden flowers for color, balance and harmony. Greenleaf Farms garden, Dover, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 29: Antiquing with the Expert. George Michael, host of the PBS series "Antiques and Americana" for 25 years. Bring one item for appraisal. 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tuesdays, Aug. 8-22: Blues School: The Blues at its Best. Acoustic, contemporary electric, rock 'n roll and R&B. Includes the Portsmouth Blues Festival. Noon to 3 p.m.

Wednesdays, Aug. 9-30: Intermediate Herbal Studies. Integrate herbs into your diet, study herbal contraindications. 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

For Youth:

June 26-30 and Aug. 14-18: Exploring Theatre, 1:30-3 p.m., for grades 2-5. Puppetry and Maskmaking, 12:30-2 p.m. June 26-30; noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 14-18; for grades 2-9.

Aug. 14-18: Musical Theatre Showcase, 8:30 a.m. to noon, for grades 4-9. Advanced Acting, 3-5 p.m., for grades 7-12.

Little Red Wagon. Traveling troupe, for children in preschool through grade 6. Info: call 862-2150. Aug. 7-9 Forest Watch. Innovative K-12 science program, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free. Info: Complex Systems Research Center, 862-1792.

For the Family:

Discovery Cruises. Board the UNH research vessel, the Gulf Challenger, for a tour of the Great Bay estuary or out to the Isles of Shoals. Use scientific tools and techniques to observe marine life from plankton to sea birds. Children 10 and older welcome when accompanied by an adult. Info: Sea Grant Extension, 749-1565.

Great Bay cruises include a stop at Jackson Estuarine Lab; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., $15. Dates: June 24, June 25, June 28, July 5, July 22, July 29, Oct. 7.
