DURHAM, N.H. -- Middle school students with an interest in writing are invited to apply to the third annual Writers Academy, sponsored by the University of New Hampshire Department of English and the New Hampshire Writing program.
The 2000 summer session runs June 26 - 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day, and is open to students currently enrolled in grades 5 through 8. Activities include daily writing, reading and discussions in a relaxed yet challenging environment. Students will also publish their own stories and poems and interview professional writers. The teaching staff includes language arts teachers, poets and guest authors.
The program is designed to attract students who enjoy writing, keeping journals, and students who prefer reading books to watching television. All interested students are encouraged to apply. Nomination by a teacher is optional.
The Writing Academy staff will select a diverse group of students who share a commitment to writing. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 8. The cost to attend is $120. For an application or further information, contact Sue Smith, in the UNH English Department, at 603-862-3963.
