UNH To Host Homecoming Weekend

DURHAM, N.H. -- Homecoming 1999 will be celebrated at the University of New Hampshire with a parade, fireworks, barbecue, jazz band, special alumni receptions, the Wildcats' game against Villanova and much more Oct. 28-31.

Alumni, parents and friends of UNH will be welcomed back to the Durham campus Thursday, Oct. 28, beginning at 6 p.m. with the traditional Blue and White Parade from C-Lot to Cowell Stadium, a pep rally, a UNH Band concert, introduction of the UNH football team and a fireworks display.

On Friday, Oct. 29, activities include a photo display, "A College in Focus," at Dimond Library all day, an information session by the UNH admissions office at 1:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building and the dedication of Conant Hall as a National Historic Chemical Landmark at 3 p.m. In sports, UNH takes on Delaware in field hockey at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Field and the men's ice hockey team faces off against RPI at 7 p.m. in the Whittemore Center. Registration at the Whittemore Center begins at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, for the annual 5K road race, which begins at 9 a.m. The race entry fee is $10 prior to the race and $12 on Oct. 30. An open house will be held at the Elliott Alumni Center from 9 a.m. to noon. From 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., an information session with college deans will be held in Paul Sweet Oval in the Field House.

Tailgating areas will open at 9:30 a.m. and a football ticket is required to access these areas. Tailgating for Homecoming and all home football games will be Boulder Field, and if needed, an adjacent area, for a fee of $5 per car. Lot A will be reserved for non-alcoholic tailgating, for a $5 fee per car. Upper Field will be used for UNH guests and official functions. Football season ticket holders are entitled to free parking in Lot A or Boulder Field.

The UNH Alumni Association's barbecue will be held in the Paul Sweet Oval, in the Field House from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., with special reunions for the classes of 1979, 1984, 1989 and 1994. A live jazz band will provide entertainment. Barbecue tickets are $9 for adults, and $6 for children under 10. A barbecue/football ticket package is available at $21 for adults, $18 for children under 10. Call (603) 862-2040 for details. Shuttle service to the barbecue from the Elliott Alumni Center will begin at 10 a.m.

Other alumni receptions will include an Air Force and Army ROTC open house in the Zais Building from 10 to 11:30 a.m., a mechanical engineering reunion in the Field House from 10 a.m. to noon, and a Whittemore School reunion at the Field House from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A non-alcoholic student party will be held at the Field House from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. vThe UNH vs. Villanova football game will kick off at noon in Cowell Stadium. Tickets are $12. A half-time ceremony will be held for UNH Hall of Fame inductees, including 1987 graduate Pamela Birsinger, 1986 graduate Sandy Costigan, 1954 graduate Marjorie Richardson Fiske, 1988 graduate Nancy Gustafson, 1975 graduate Gail Ricketson Helfer, 1987 graduate Pauline Collins Irwin, 1994 graduate Suzanne Merz, and 1970 Anna Lee Miller Serrano.

Following the football game, fraternity and sorority open houses will be held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The UNH women's volleyball team will play Drexel at 4 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium. Tickets are $5, with seniors and under 18, $3. Tickets will be available at the door.

Also following the game, the alumni association will hold a reception in the Elliott Alumni Center from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. A social hour for the Wildcat Winners Circle Hall of Honor will be held in the New England Center from 5:30-6:30 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Call (603) 862-4148 for tickets.

On Sunday, the women's volleyball team will play Hofstra at 1 p.m. in Lundholm Gym. Tickets are $5, with seniors and under 18, $3. Tickets will be available at the door. At 1 p.m., the field hockey team will play Towson at Memorial Field, and at 3 p.m., the UNH women's ice hockey team will play Concordia in the Whittemore Center. Tickets are $5 for adults, with seniors, general admission and under 18, $3. Tickets will be available at the door.
