DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire was notified today by the state Department of Health and Human Services that a student has died of possible meningitis. The university is saddened by the news and extends its sympathies to the student’s family and friends.

Pending confirmation from the Department of Health and Human Services that the cause of death was meningitis, the university is prepared to provide appropriate education to students when they return from the holiday break January 16. University of New Hampshire officials will also continue to work cooperatively with the state. Information on meningitis is available on the university’s Health Services Web site at www.unh.edu/health-services or from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’ Web site at www.cdc.gov. The university has been encouraging students to follow the CDC’s recommendation regarding vaccination against meningococcal disease for several years.
