DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire Alumni Association recently named the first four recipients of its new Family Legacy Scholarship. The scholarships are based on academic achievement, leadership skills, breadth of extracurricular interests and a connection to the alumni association. Recipients must have a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who is a dues-paying member of the UNH Alumni Association.

Starting in the fall, the program will provide one student from each class at UNH with a scholarship that will follow the student until graduation. Freshman biology major Elizabeth Brooks of Barrington, R.I.; sophomore health management and policy major Celie Harris of Durham; junior civil engineering major Craig Shillaber of Deerfield; and senior mathematics and economics major Heidi Tillotson of Concord will each receive an annual award of $3,000.

The Family Legacy endowed scholarship fund of $250,000 was the Alumni Association’s contribution to the university’s recent capital campaign. “UNH is among a limited number of schools leading the way with this sort of alumni-driven scholarship,” said Gregg Sanborn, executive director of the Alumni Association.

Initially, the awards from the fully endowed fund will be modest, says Sarah Potter, associate executive director at the association, “but our hope is to grow over time.”
