UNH
Magazine wins CASE gold medal
The UNH
Magazine has won a gold medal award for
best magazine from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education
(CASE) District I.
CASE is an international organization that advances and supports
educational institutions. District I includes the six New England
states and five eastern provinces of Canada.
UNH Magazine is a publication for alumni, parents, friends and
the UNH community. Published three times per year, it is mailed
to 100,000 readers.
It was launched in 1998.
The award was presented to Meg Torbert, interim editor, and Valerie
Lester, designer, Jan. 26 at a CASE District I conference in Boston.
“The UNH Magazine is an outstanding publication, and does a terrific
job of letting readers know about the excellent work and accomplishments
of UNH alumni, faculty and students,” says UNH President
Ann Weaver Hart.
“In each issue, people learn about the world-class
programs we have at UNH in academics, outreach and research. We
are thrilled that the UNH Magazine has won this prestigious CASE
gold medal and anticipate many more informative issues produced
by our talented staff.”
According to designer Lester, the magazine’s team strives
to provide a mix of eye-catching illustrations and photos to complement
the writing and draw readers into articles.
“ We have great staff photographers on campus. They really know their
university, and they know the correct photographic techniques to
use,” she said. “Our team strives for quality work.
It really is a team effort.”
Ernie Gale, the UNH Alumni Association’s executive director,
says the award is a “confirmation of what we hear from the
magazine’s readers. One just wrote us last week to say that
the ‘UNH Magazine is better reading than any national magazine.’ ”
Gale adds that the purpose of the magazine is to allow readers
to discover what is happening at the University of New Hampshire
today. “We’re very proud that our magazine has won
this gold medal, which is the most respected and coveted award
in a CASE district that contains many expensive private colleges
and universities,” says Gale. “The magazine is a reflection
of the university itself, so UNH is being honored as well.”
“Broadway has its Tonys, television its Emmys and Hollywood
its Oscars, but for institutions of higher education in New England,
there are the CASE Awards,” Torbert says. “For us,
this medal is a huge thrill.”
