Democracy and Equity in Schools Topic of Next Sidore Lecture

Democracy and equity in public schools is the topic of the next Saul O Sidore Memorial Lecture at UNH Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
The lecture, “Democracy, Equity, and Our Public Schools,” begins at 4 p.m. in the MUB Theatre II. Deborah Meier, adjunct professor at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education and director of New Ventures at Mission Hill School in Boston, is the featured speaker.
Meier has spent more than four decades working in public education as a teacher, writer and public advocate. The schools she has helped create serve predominantly low-income African-American and Latino students and are considered exemplars of reform nationally.
The Saul O Sidore Memorial 2008-2009 Lecture Series is organized by the Carsey Institute, the Department of Education, and the Department of Sociology.
Sponsored by the UNH Center for the Humanities, the Saul O Sidore Memorial Lecture Series was established in 1965 in memory of Saul O Sidore of Manchester to provide programs to the university community and state of New Hampshire that raise critical and sometimes controversial issues facing society.
