In addition to the gym membership offered by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to eligible UNH employees (up to $500 a year), the health insurance company will now pay up to $200 for CPR/first aid, yoga and pilates classes, ballroom dancing and massage therapy.
Linda Hayden, assistant director of Campus Recreation, received word this week that
Harvard Pilgrim had given UNH the green light on reimbursement for the non-credit educational courses.
Harvard Pilgrim’s Wellness Connection program promotes adopting or maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Additional education classes include quitting smoking, managing stress, nutrition, weight loss and parenting classes.
“This opens up a world of opportunities for staff who may have avoided taking class at the Rec Center for whatever reason,” Hayden says. “Now, each semester, someone can take our yoga classes and get reimbursed.”
Lunchtime yoga classes are offered Wednesday and Friday from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $30 for Rec Center members and $60 for nonmembers.
Classes can also be taken elsewhere as long as they are approved by Harvard Pilgrim. Beginning in January the new classes cited above will show up on Harvard Pilgrim’s list of those eligible. To be reimbursed, participants must attend at least 75 percent of the classes and then submit a certificate of completion.
“It’s great that employees can now be reimbursed for CPR classes,” Hayden says. “We have had quite few a few faculty and staff who have done them on their own. Ballroom dancing and massage therapy are nice additions.”
