contributions college students make through volunteerism.
In October, the six winners of the awards were announced. In the
general excellence category, awards went to California State University,
Monterey Bay, Seaside, C.A..; Elon University, Elon, N.C., and
Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, I.N.

Sewer Work Notice: Possible Smoking Manholes
Starting Oct. 30, UNH and the Town of Durham will be smoke testing
the sanitary sewer system off the Petty Brook Sewer interceptor.
Testing will be done from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and should last approximately
3 days. The test itself takes about ½ hour per building.
Eastern Pipe Service Inc. of New Hampshire will conduct the test.
Smoke testing, done in the street manholes, is used to locate
sources of extraneous flow to the sewer system (i.e. catch basins,
roof leaders, etc). The smoke is non-toxic and non-staining.
You may see smoke coming from roof top vents or nearby manholes.
Smoke should not be entering your building unless there is a defect
in the building’s plumbing or a plumbing trap is not primed.
Every effort will be made to prime traps that are not used frequently.
The testing may set off your smoke detector/fire alarm. If this
happens, follow normal evacuation procedures. Facilities will ventilate
and reset the building alarm system.
People who should not be exposed to smoke of any type should call
2-1437 prior to testing so that we may take suitable precautions.
The testing will take place in the following buildings:

NHEP Seeks Proposals
The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP), in partnership with
the New Hampshire Coastal Program (NHCP), is requesting proposals
from qualified individuals or organizations to conduct activities
that will result in the completion of on-the-ground habitat restoration
for multiple estuarine species in the tidal waters of New Hampshire.
Total funding available is $120,000. An applicant may submit a
project proposal for any amount up to $120,000. Nonfederal matching
funds (cash or in-kind services) must account for at least 20 percent
of the total cost of the project. NHEP funding for this program
($60,000) is provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
through an agreement with UNH. NHCP is providing $60,000 of funds
from NOAA. Contracts will be executed between UNH and successful
applicants.
All project activities must be completed no later than June 30,
2009.
It is recommended that applicants use the Great
Bay Estuarine Restoration Compendium (8.5MB/.pdf) to identify potential restoration
areas which would benefit multiple species.
An original proposal, five double-sided copies, and an electronic
version (PDF or Word formats) must be received by Phil Trowbridge,
NHEP Coastal Scientist, New Hampshire Department of Environmental
Services, P.O. Box 95, Concord, NH 03301-0095, no later than 4
p.m. Nov. 1. Faxed proposals will not be accepted. The electronic
version of the proposal may be emailed to ptrowbridge@des.state.nh.us,
however, hardcopies of the proposal must be submitted before the
deadline to be eligible for funding.
Direct questions to Phil Trowbridge, NHEP Coastal Scientist, at
(603) 271-8872 or ptrowbridge@des.state.nh.us.
