Concert Choir performs Rachmaninoff Vespers

The music department presents the concert choir, under the direction of William Kempster, in a performance of the “All-Night Vigil” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center.

A second performance takes place Thursday, Oct. 26, at 8 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1035 Lafayette Rd., Portsmouth. This masterwork from the Russian Orthodox tradition will be performed in “Old Church Slavonic.”

Celebrity Series presents Teatro Lirico D’Europa Puccini’s “La Bohème”

Teatro Lirico D'Europa returns to the Johnson Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. with their production of Puccini’s “La Bohème.”

The European opera touring company formed in 1988 by Giorgio Lalov, a former opera singer, has completed more than 3,000 performances worldwide, including 7 major U.S. tours.

Faculty and Sculpture Lewis Cohen Exhibits
Two new exhibitions featuring contemporary sculpture, drawings, photography, prints, and paintings will open to the public at The Art Gallery, Paul Creative Arts Center, on Saturday, Oct. 28.

“Art Faculty Review: Julee Holcombe, Craig Hood, and Scott Schnepf’” highlights recent works in photography, painting, and printmaking by three studio art faculty members in the Department of Art and Art History.

“Lewis Cohen: Five Decades, Drawings and Sculptures: A Retrospective 1951-2006” showcases the 50-year career of an important American figurative artist, whose work includes the public sculpture of John Singleton Copley in Boston's Copley Square.

A preview reception for both exhibitions, open to the public free of charge, will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibitions will remain on view through Dec. 11. The Art Gallery will be closed Nov. 22 through Nov. 26.

Flu Clinic

Health Services will hold a flu clinic Wednesday, Nov.15, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Granite State Room. Faculty and staff are encouraged to get immunized. Cost is $25. Theatre Productions

Two Theatre Department Offerings: Rare Production of Hamlet and A Musical Revue The theatre and dance department will perform “Hamlet Quarto” directed by David Richman, 1993 winner of the Lindberg Memorial Award, at the Johnson Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center, Nov. 8-12.

On Nov. 14, the Musical Theatre Showcase will be presented at the Hennessy Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center, at 6 p.m.

Tickets may be purchased at the MUB ticket office, Monday -Friday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; by calling 2-2290 or at www.unhmub.com. General admission for “Hamlet Quarto” is $12.50. All others, including seniors, UNH ID holders, children 12 and under and groups of 15 or more, are $10.50.

The Best Defense: UNH Police Teach Women How to Defend Themselves

The UNH Police Department will offer a women's self defense course for faculty and staff Oct. 23, 25, 30 and Nov. 1.

The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Systems Basic Personal Defense class is a nation-wide program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women only. The course will be taught by UNH police officers who are nationally certified RAD instructors.

Watch Your Weight With Weight Watchers--Oct. 18

The first meeting for Weight Watchers will be held Oct. 18 from 12 to 1 p.m. in Room 302 in the MUB. The rest of the meetings (except for Nov. 15 which will be held in Room 302) will be in Room 321. The 12-week program (one week free) costs $144 and can be reimbursed through CIGNA and then Harvard Pilgrim.

Native American Artist Talk at Paul Creative Arts Center

Internationally renowned Native American artist George Longfish will give a talk about his politically edgy, often humorous paintings on Friday, Oct. 20 at noon in A219, PCAC. Sponsored by American Studies. Free and open to the public.

“Ghost Hunter” Peter Jordan

Peter Jordan, parapsychologist, writer, and ghost hunter returns to UNH for the second part to his lecture on ghosts on Oct. 25, at 9 p.m. in the Strafford Room. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the MUB. Arriving early is recommended, as many were turned away last year.

With 30 years of experience, Jordan has been investigating hundreds of files that include but are not limited to real life encounters of hauntings, poltergeists, demons. He was one of the few to investigate The Amityville Horror House and his research has been featured on “ABC’s 20/20”, “CBS News”, “Unsolved Mysteries”, and “New York Times”.

UNH Parent Association Grants Available

Faculty, staff and students are invited to submit proposals for UNH Parents Association Grants for the 2006-2007 academic school year. Grants are given for projects not typically undertaken by the university.

The deadline for the fall discretionary grants is Wednesday, Nov, 1, 2006, at 12 p.m. and the spring major grants deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at 12 p.m. Applications and guidelines are available only online at www.unh.edu./parents.

CopyNet Card upgrades to Cat's Cache system

Students can now use their Cat's Cache card to make copies and prints with the upgrade of the CopyNet debit card to Cat’s Cache. To transfer money from a CopyNet Card to a Cat’s Cache account, bring the card to the Dining/ID Office, Holloway Commons, Room 101, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Fund transfers will be made through the end of Fall 2006 semester.

All UNH ID card holders automatically have a Cat’s Cache account. Others may purchase a Cat’s Cache Guest Card. Fund transfers can be made at:

Request for proposals

The UNH Center for the Humanities is accepting applications for the James H. Hayes and Claire Short Hayes Chair in the Humanities. The Hayes Chair was established by James H. Hayes '32 and Claire Short Hayes '34 and intended to be a focal point within the University for research and teaching, concentrated on New Hampshire's history, culture and government.

NHEP Seeks Proposals

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP), in partnership with the New Hampshire Coastal Program (NHCP), is requesting proposals from qualified individuals or organizations to conduct activities that will result in the completion of on-the-ground habitat restoration for multiple estuarine species in the tidal waters of New Hampshire.

Total funding available is $120,000. An applicant may submit a project proposal for any amount up to $120,000. Nonfederal matching funds (cash or in-kind services) must account for at least 20 percent of the total cost of the project. NHEP funding for this program ($60,000) is provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through an agreement with UNH. NHCP is providing $60,000 of funds from NOAA. Contracts will be executed between UNH and successful applicants.

All project activities must be completed no later than June 30, 2009.

It is recommended that applicants use the Great Bay Estuarine Restoration Compendium (8.5MB/.pdf) to identify potential restoration areas which would benefit multiple species.

An original proposal, five double-sided copies, and an electronic version (PDF or Word formats) must be received by Phil Trowbridge, NHEP Coastal Scientist, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, P.O. Box 95, Concord, NH 03301-0095, no later than 4 p.m. Nov. 1. Faxed proposals will not be accepted. The electronic version of the proposal may be emailed to ptrowbridge@des.state.nh.us, however, hardcopies of the proposal must be submitted before the deadline to be eligible for funding.
