Fellowships Office Seeking Faculty Referrals For Grants and Fellowships
The Fellowships Office is looking to faculty members for the names of the
best and brightest from the student body to compete for national and international
grants and fellowships.
Among the fellowships opportunities are several renowned national and international
rewards, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright.
Robert Stiefel, Fellowships coordinator, will be presenting four information
sessions in October and November for both underclassmen seeking financing and
distinction as well as current juniors interested in post baccalaureate fellowships.
The presentations will be in Hood House, Room 226, October 24 and 31 at 12:30
p.m., and November 8 and 13 at 12:00.
The information sessions will also introduce UNH’s highest achievers
to many lesser known yet very prestigious fellowships, including the Udall
Fellowship, focusing on environmental studies; the Soros Fellowship, for ‘New
Americans’ entering doctoral studies, and the Point Foundation, that
gives aid to LGBT graduate and undergraduate students.

Hydrant Flushing
On Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, UNH and the Town of Durham will begin flushing fire
hydrants and will continue to do so for the next two weeks, Monday through
Friday from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m.
Testing the valves stirs up sediment, so some discoloration of the water may
occur; however, the water remains safe for drinking throughout the distribution
system. If you encounter discolored water, you can let the water run until
it is clear.
If there are concerns, please contact Dave Cedarholm from the town of Durham
at 868-5578 or Wesley East, UNH Water Supply, at 862-1390.

Two Theatre Department Offerings: Rare Production of Hamlet and A Musical Revue
The UNH Department of Theatre and Dance will perform “Hamlet Quarto” directed
by David Richman, 1993 winner of the Lindberg Memorial Award, at the Johnson
Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center, Nov. 8-12.
On Nov. 14, the UNH Musical Theatre Showcase will be presented at the Hennessy
Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center, at 6 p.m.
When the tragedy of Hamlet was first published more than 400 years ago, it
was quite different—swifter, edgier, more bizarre—from the play
we believe we know so well. The first published Hamlet is seldom read, more
seldom performed.
The UNH Theatre and Dance Department’s rare production of this old and
mysterious script will make the world’s most familiar play seem once
again new and shockingly strange.
Tickets may be purchased at the MUB ticket office, Monday through Friday,
between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; by calling 603-862-2290 or at www.unhmub.com . General admission is $12.50. All others, including seniors, UNH ID holders,
children 12 and under and groups of 15 or more, are $10.50.
The Musical Theatre Showcase will be performed, directed, designed, and choreographed
by the Musical Theatre majors (the future performers of Broadway, national
tours, television, and cruise lines). Twenty-eight talented students will present
a fun-filled evening of comedy and drama through scene and song; a not to be
missed event!
Tickets are $3.50 each and proceeds will benefit Theatre and Dance scholarships.
Advanced ticket purchase is recommended. Contact the MUB ticket office (Monday – Friday,
10am - 4pm) at 603-862-2290. You may also purchase tickets at www.unhmub.com.
The Theatre Lobby Box Office opens one hour prior to curtain. For more information,
call the Theatre and Dance office at 603-862-0093.

The Best Defense: UNH Police Teach Women How to Defend Themselves
The UNH Police Department will offer a women's self defense course for faculty
and staff Oct. 23, 25, 30 and Nov. 1.
The Rape Aggression Defense RAD)Systems Basic Personal Defense class is a
nation-wide program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women
only. The course will be taught by UNH police officers who are nationally certified
RAD Instructors.
The goal of the program is to provide realistic self-defense options to women,
regardless of their level of physical conditioning. Students at all levels
of ability, age, experience, and strength will be provided with techniques
and information that can be effectively used from the first day of class.
RAD is not a martial arts program, nor does it require students to be athletes
in training to succeed.
The RAD system will provide students with the knowledge to make an educated
decision about personal defense. Information is provided on physical and non-physical
options, as well as insight into the attacker mindset.
Every student receives a manual for reference and practice. Once a student
has completed a RAD program, their signed manual becomes a ticket for free
lifetime return and practice with any RAD instructor in the US and Canada.
Classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. For an application or further
information call UNH PD at 862-1427 or go to the UNH police Website at www.unh.edu/upd/RAD.html or email the program instructors at UNHPolice.RAD@unh.edu

NHEP Seeks Proposals
The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP), in partnership with
the New Hampshire Coastal Program (NHCP), is requesting proposals from qualified
individuals or organizations to conduct activities that will result in the
completion of on-the-ground habitat restoration for multiple estuarine species
in the tidal waters of New Hampshire.
Total funding available for this grant is $120,000. The
NHEP expects to fund several restoration projects. An applicant
may submit a project proposal for any amount up to $120,000.
Nonfederal matching funds (cash or in-kind services) must
account for at least 20 percent of the total cost of the
project. NHEP funding for this program ($60,000) is provided
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through an agreement
with the University of New Hampshire. The New Hampshire
Coastal Program is providing $60,000 of funds from NOAA.
Contracts will be executed between UNH and successful applicants
for projects selected for funding.
All project activities must be completed no later than
June 30, 2009.
It is recommended that applicants use the Great
Bay Estuarine Restoration Compendium (8.5MB/.pdf) to identify potential
restoration areas which would benefit multiple species.
An original proposal, five double-sided copies, and an
electronic version (PDF or Word formats) must be received
by Phil Trowbridge, NHEP Coastal Scientist, New Hampshire
Department of Environmental Services, P.O. Box 95, Concord,
NH 03301-0095, no later than 4:00 PM on November 1, 2006.
Faxed proposals will not be accepted. The electronic version
of the proposal may be emailed to ptrowbridge@des.state.nh.us,
however, hardcopies of the proposal must be submitted before
the deadline to be eligible for funding.
Direct questions to Phil Trowbridge, NHEP Coastal Scientist,
