Northeast Passage Tonight On New Hampshire Chronicle
If you missed it this summer, tonight you can catch the story New Hampshire Chronicle did on Northeast Passage’s two-day adaptive sports event held in August.

Northeast Passage collaborated with the Shepherd Center of Atlanta, Georgia, to offer cycling (handcycling trials), adaptive golf, an introduction to the growing sport of Quad Rugby, adaptive kayaking and waterskiing.

Participants have acquired spinal cord injuries, received care at Shepherd and have returned home to New England. Most are in their teens and 20’s and have relatively new injuries.

The New Hampshire Chronicle spent the entire two days following the program, its participants and their families. (10-04-06)

David Watters on The Exchange Oct. 6
David Watters, English professor and director of UNH's Center for New England Culture, will be a guest on NHPR's final installment of “Granite State Stories” Friday, Oct. 6.

The live show will feature Russell Banks, author of “Trailerpark,” a novel that explores the fictitious lives of men and women living in a New Hampshire trailer park. Watters was one of two project humanists for “Granite State Stories.” (10-04-06)

Brazilian-Flare: Ongoing Faculty Concert Series
The UNH Faculty Concert Series presents “Obrigado Brazil” with David Newsam, guitarist, Natalia Bernal, vocalist, Andres Espinoza, percussionist and Ellen Rondina, flutist.

Music Alumnus To Perform Concert
Nicaraguan classical guitarist and UNH graduate Isaac Bustos will present a one night concert Oct. 11, at 8 p.m., in the Bratton Recital Hall, Paul Creative Arts Center.

Born in Managua, Bustos began playing popular Latin-American music by ear when he was 11. At age 12, he was accepted into the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica in Managua where he received top honors in guitar performance.

Bustos immigrated to the United States with his family in 1988 and continued his studies with the late Cuban guitar virtuoso Juan Mercadal. He received his bachelor’s of music degree in guitar performance from UNH and his master’s of music from the University of Texas at Austin. Bustos is currently on the faculty at Texas A&M University in the department of performance studies.

The program includes music of Domenico Scarlatti, Manuel M. Ponce, Regino Sainz de la Maza, J.S. Bach, Joaquin Rodrigo and Mauro Giuliani and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the UNH Music Department at (603) 862-2404. (10-04-06)

Watch Your Weight With Weight Watchers--Oct. 18

“Ghost Hunter” Peter Jordan
Peter Jordan, parapsychologist, writer, and ghost hunter, is back by popular demand and returns to UNH for the second part to his lecture on ghosts. He will be speaking on October 25, at 9pm in the Strafford Room.

With 30 years of experience, Jordan has been investigating hundreds of files that include but are not limited to real life encounters of hauntings, poltergeists, demons. Seussical the Musical at UNH Theatre
The Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant are just two Dr. Seuss characters who will sing and dance their way across the Johnson Theatre stage during the UNH Theatre and Dance department’s presentation of “Seussical”, Oct. 11-15, in the Paul Creative Arts Center.

Musical numbers will feature Latin, pop, swing, gospel and rhythm and blues along with aerial stunts and giant puppets.

Sidore Series on Violence against Women Continues Sept. 27
The Saul O Sidore Memorial Lecture Series at UNH continues Wednesday, Sept. 27, when philosopher Uma Narayan discusses violence against women from a global perspective in her lecture “The Politics of Rescue and the Politics of Forgetting: Expanding Feminist Notions on Imperialism and Violence.”

All lectures are Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Building’s Theatre II. Lectures, free and open to the public, will be followed by facilitated dialogues run by and for men, women, and all people.

UNH CopyNet Card upgrades to Cat's Cache system
Students can now use their Cat's Cache card to make copies and prints with the upgrade of the CopyNet debit card to Cat’s Cache. To transfer money from a CopyNet Card to a Cat’s Cache account, bring the card to the Dining/ID Office, Holloway Commons, Room 101, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Fund transfers will be made through the end of Fall 2006 semester.

All UNH ID card holders automatically have a Cat’s Cache account. Others may purchase a Cat’s Cache Guest Card. Fund transfers can be made at:

The UNH Center for the Humanities is now accepting applications for the James H. Hayes and Claire Short Hayes Chair in the Humanities. The Hayes Chair was established by James H. Hayes '32 and Claire Short Hayes '34 and intended to be a focal point within the University for research and teaching, concentrated on New Hampshire's history, culture and government.

NHEP Seeks Proposals
The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP), in partnership with the New Hampshire Coastal Program (NHCP), is requesting proposals from qualified individuals or organizations to conduct activities that will result in the completion of on-the-ground habitat restoration for multiple estuarine species in the tidal waters of New Hampshire.

Total funding available for this grant is $120,000. The NHEP expects to fund several restoration projects. An applicant may submit a project proposal for any amount up to $120,000. Nonfederal matching funds (cash or in-kind services) must account for at least 20 percent of the total cost of the project. NHEP funding for this program ($60,000) is provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through an agreement with the University of New Hampshire. The New Hampshire Coastal Program is providing $60,000 of funds from NOAA. Contracts will be executed between UNH and successful applicants for projects selected for funding.

All project activities must be completed no later than June 30, 2009.

It is recommended that applicants use the Great Bay Estuarine Restoration Compendium (8.5MB/.pdf) to identify potential restoration areas which would benefit multiple species.

An original proposal, five double-sided copies, and an electronic version (PDF or Word formats) must be received by Phil Trowbridge, NHEP Coastal Scientist, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, P.O. Box 95, Concord, NH 03301-0095, no later than 4:00 PM on November 1, 2006. Faxed proposals will not be accepted. The electronic version of the proposal may be emailed to ptrowbridge@des.state.nh.us, however, hardcopies of the proposal must be submitted before the deadline to be eligible for funding.
