Purcell Opera Nov. 10-12
The UNH Opera Program will present Henry Purcell’s famous opera,
Dido and Aeneas in the Bratton Recital Hall of the Paul Creative Arts Center
on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 12
at 3:00 p.m. The production is free and open to the public.
The opera tells of the poignant love between Dido and Aeneas, torn apart
by Aeneas’ conviction of his personal destiny to found Rome and his
responsibility to that calling before his love of Dido. Purcell’s
beautiful score is full of grace, charm, wit, and memorable character development
taking place in a short period of time; the opera lasts about one hour.
Outstanding UNH vocalists are present in all leading roles. The wonderful
baritone, Nicholas LaRoche will sing Aeneas. Up and coming star Amal El-Shrafi,
sings Dido and the beautiful voice of Kathleen O’Boyle shines as her
confidant, Belinda. The production features a Sorcerer and witches, who
seek to undermine Aeneas’ plans, full chorus and string quintet with
harpsichord directed by David Ripley. Seating is limited and early arrival
therefore encouraged. For more information, call the UNH Music Department
