UNHM hosts the ninth annual Summer Program for ESOL Students (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Monday, July 3, through Thursday, August 3. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday mornings, with no classes July 4. More than 200 students have participated in this program, which prepares high school and returning adult students who are intermediate to advanced English Language Learners for success in U.S. colleges and universities.
Students receive intensive practice in English skills required for upper-level academic work, including listening to lectures, reading advanced texts, writing and revising essays, and taking part in class discussions. They also participate in workshops on time management, test-taking, learning styles, and the processes of college application and course selection.Information and application materials are available from Learning Center Administrative Assistant Vicki Lee at 641-4113 or ESOL Coordinator Michael Pugh at 641-4155, rp@cisunix.unh.edu, or on-line at www.unh.edu/unhm/learningcenter/esol.html.
In addition, UNH Manchester will be offering the EXCELL program
(Excellence in Education for English Language Learners) for the
third year to middle school students ages 12 through 14. The
program runs from Wednesday, July 5, through Wednesday, August
2, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Like the Summer Program for ESOL Students
on which it is modeled, the EXCELL program provides intensive
English practice and college orientation. It stresses the importance
of early planning for college and choosing the right courses
and directions in high school. The EXCELL program is free
to accepted students, and there is a $20 nonrefundable registration
fee. Information and application materials will be available
from middle school ESL teachers. For more information about the
ESOL and EXCELL programs, call Pugh at 641-4155.
