J. Gregg Sanborn, executive director of the University of New Hampshire Alumni Association, has won the 2006 Eleanor Collier Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District I. He was selected for contributions that reflect honor on CASE, higher education and the field of academic administration. District I is comprised of the six New England states plus the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec.

“There are few people, if any, currently at the University of New Hampshire who have had a greater positive impact on the university and on public education in New Hampshire than Gregg Sanborn,” the award statement reads. “His steady and thoughtful leadership in a wide variety of positions has been an example to all who have worked with him or followed in his footsteps.”

In the 34 years that Sanborn has served UNH, he has been the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs; Director of the Memorial Union and Student Activities; Dean of Student Affairs; Executive Assistant to the President (a 10-year period during which he served five presidents); Interim Executive Director, UNH Alumni Association and his current position, Executive Director, UNH Alumni Association.

A native of Exeter, N.H., Sanborn graduated from UNH in 1966 with a B.A. degree in zoology. During the Vietnam War, he served in the Air Force as a navigator on KC-135 Stratotankers. He joined UNH in 1971 as an assistant to the then-Dean of Students, Dick Stevens. Sanborn also earned a master’s degree in counseling at UNH, in 1977.

Sanborn was presented the Eleanor Collier Award at a ceremony at the CASE District I annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, earlier this year.
