UNHM Professor Resch Wins An Award For Newest Book, Americans
At War John
Resch, professor of history at UNHMr, won the "Best Reference
of 2005" award from the Reference and User Services Association
(RUSA), a division of the American Library Association, for Americans
at War: Society, Culture, and the Homefront, the multi-volume
series for which he was editor. The series was the only award winning
title for RUSA in 2005. This four-volume reference set examines
the profound effect of war upon American society, culture, and national
identity.
Resch writes in the preface, "Preparation for war, war itself,
and the legacy of war are among the most important forces shaping
American society and culture. Nevertheless, the study of war is
often treated as if the only topics of importance were battles and
campaigns, results measured in territory, and reputations gained
or lost." Americans at War includes over three hundred articles
written by scholars representing a variety of disciplines and covering
a variety of topics.
Americans at War is published by Macmillan Reference USA. According
to the publisher, "Articles include biographies and topics
such as civil liberties, media, politics, popular culture, religion,
memory and national identity, civic celebrations and monumental
art, literature, the roles of women and minorities, veterans, science
and technology, humor, and music."
Other publications by Professor Resch include Suffering Soldiers:
Revolutionary War Veterans, Moral Sentiment and Political Culture
in the Early Republic, and contributions to No Higher Calling:
A Collection of Essays on the Social History of Child and Family
Services. Resch is chairman of the board of directors of the
New Hampshire Humanities Council.
