Support The 9th Annual Oyster River Clean Up
Volunteers Needed Sept. 17

UNH's Office of Sustainability, the New Hampshire Coastal Program, and local partners will host the ninth annual Oyster River Clean-up on Saturday, Sept. 17, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Volunteers will meet at the far end of the Durham Marketplace parking lot beyond the credit union. Gloves, bags, data sheets and refreshments will be provided. The information collected will be used to develop pollution prevention policy for marine ecosystems and NH coastal zones.

The Oyster River Clean-up is a campus and Durham community effort is a project of the UNH Office of Sustainability Program's "Biodiversity Education Initiative" to highlight the importance of the ecological health of the local watershed. It is also part of the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy. Since 1986, citizens worldwide have gathered on the third Saturday in September to clean waterways and coastlines.

The Oyster River watershed is the primary source of water for the UNH/ Durham community, while providing habitat for numerous species of plants and wildlife. The watershed has a drainage area of 31 square miles, with the river beginning in Barrington, NH then continuing through portions of Nottingham, Lee, Madbury and Durham before flowing into Little Bay.
