By Ginger Lever, UNHM College Relations

UNH at Manchester will feature a presentation by Stephen Pugh, Ph.D. as part of the college’s Brown Bag Luncheon Lecture Series Nov. 2 in the University Center Auditorium. The topic is “Teaching Biology in a Wilderness Setting or What I did on my Summer Vacation.”

During summer 2005, Pugh returned to a biology field station in northern Minnesota where he studied as an undergraduate student. His presentation will feature his adventures and the challenges of teaching biology in the wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. In his course on the behavior and ecology of mammals, students learned about the social structure of a wolf pack in a setting where wolves could be heard howling from across the lake.

Pugh, an associate professor of biology at UNHM, coordinates the biological sciences program. In addition to the wilderness of Minnesota, his research laboratory includes Hackett Hill in Manchester. Pugh earned his bachelor's from Ripon College, master's from the University of North Dakota and Ph.D. from Boston University.
