A Little Night Music Runs Oct. 12-16

The Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to announce A Little Night Music, (book by Hugh Wheeler, music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) Oct. 12-16 at the Johnson Theatre, PCAC. Inspired by Bergman’s film, Smiles Of A Summer Night, this musical theatre comedy has won Tony Awards (Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book) and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.

In turn-of-the-century Sweden, the yearning desires of romance lead to several mismatched love triangles — a perfect story and setting for breathtaking lyrics, sassy humor, three-quarter-time music, and sophisticated elegance. This waltz of relationships, desperation, flirtation, euphoria, and scandal culminates in “A Weekend in the Country” — a Sondheim number comparable to the musical genius of Gilbert and Sullivan who revolutionized the theatre world. Sondheim’s “Send in the Clown” crossed-over to popular music with recordings by Judy Collins (1975 Grammy Award, Song of the Year) and Barbra Streisand (1986 release). My eyes ran over with sentiment and pleasure,” said Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “. . . urbane and often brilliantly funny, but there are many moments of piercing human pain,” said The Daily Telegraph.

May be inappropriate for 15 and under.
