Staff Professional Development grant deadline is June 1
The next quarterly deadline for the Staff Professional Development grant is June 1, 2005. This grant is open to all operating, PAT and EE staff at Durham and Manchester who have been employed in a status position for a minimum of one year, and have not received a previous Staff Professional Development grant in the past 12 months. Retirement party for Nancy Blair and Laura Wood is May 18

Please join UHS dining as it congratulates long-time employees Nancy Blair and Laura Wood on their retirement Wednesday, May 18. A retirement party will be held in the third floor dining room in Holloway Commons at 2:30 p.m. Blair has been with UNH since August 1982 and Wood has been with UNH since September 1987. (05-04-05)

Teachers as Researchers conference May 6
The Third Annual Teachers as Researchers (TaR) Conference will be held Friday, May 6, at UNH Manchester. The conference is free and open to the public. Keynote speaker is Charles Ott, SAU 56 superintendent (Somersworth and Rollinsford) who was recently named New Hampshire Superintendent of the Year for 2004-2005. Ott will speak at 9 a.m., and presentations will run from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. This year's conference will feature presentations by 39 education graduate students completing their full-year internships in Manchester, Bedford, and Hooksett public schools. A distinguishing feature of the nationally recognized UNH teacher education program is the full-year graduate internship in a public school classroom. Each year, approximately 150-175 interns are placed in more than 20 schools in New Hampshire. Book it to Nigeria
Funso Afolayan, associate professor of history at UNH, and his Modern World History class are running a book drive to benefit students at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria. This is Afolayan’s second book drive for the university, which relies heavily on outside support. Collection boxes are located in buildings around the Durham campus, including the Memorial Union Building and Dimond Library. All books in good condition, regardless of age or subject, will be accepted and students are encouraged to donate their textbooks at the end of the semester. Donations are also being accepted to cover the cost of shipping the books in a large cargo container to Nigeria at the end of May. Visit http://www.unh.edu/bookdrive for more information. (04-28-05)

Free speech and hearing screenings available May 11

In recognition of May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department will offer free speech and hearing screenings Wednesday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hewitt Hall (1st floor). Information about hearing conservation will also be available. The screenings will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Please call 2-2110 to

PAT/EE/OS recognition is Friday, May 6
The University of New Hampshire’s Staff Recognition Program, which includes the Presidential Award of Excellence presentations, is Friday, May 6. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Granite State Room of the MUB. The university community is invited to attend this event. UNH and Durham flushing water mains
UNH and the Town of Durham will be flushing community water mains April 25 to May 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be no flushing during the weekend hours. Water main flushing is necessary to eliminate built-up of sediment in the water mains. These procedures stir up sediment, so some discoloration of the water may occur; however, the water remains safe for drinking. Info: Facilities Support Center at 2-1437. (04-13-05)

Camp Wildcat still has openings
There are still spaces available for all three sessions of Camp Wildcat 2005. Camp Wildcat is a day camp for youths going into grades 2 to 7. Session I runs from June 27-July 8, Session II from July 11-July 22, and Session III from July 25-August 5.  Cost per session of Camp Wildcat is $270. Summer learning program accepting students

Discover Summer Learning for students entering grades 1-6 will be held July 12 to Aug. 12, 2005, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Oyster River Middle School. The program, which is offered by the UNH Department of Education, costs $150 for the first student and $130 for each additional child in a family. Scholarships are available.
