War
surgeon shares his experiences in UNH lecture
By Erika Mantz, Media Relations
Gino Strada, internationally-recognized war surgeon and writer,
will discuss his experiences in war-torn countries and his book,
Green Parrots: A War Surgeon’s Diary, at UNH Wednesday, March
23, as part of the New
Hampshire International Seminar Series.
His lecture is free and open to the public. It will take place in
the UNH Memorial Union Building, Theatre I, at 4 p.m. Light refreshments
begin at 3:40 p.m. Strada will also show portions of a film during
his address and will be available to sign copies of his book.
Strada co-founded a non-governmental organization called Emergency
that raises funds to build and maintain health care facilities in
war-torn countries, and also campaigns to ban antipersonnel mines.
His 15 years of experience convinced him that a small, flexible
and highly specialized organization like Emergency was necessary
to intervene in favor of the civilian victims of war without being
hindered by the bureaucratic slowness of governments and the military.
