The Great Plague in art and history is topic of UNH Manchester brown bag lecture

The University of New Hampshire at Manchester presents "Black Death: The Great Plague in Art and History," a Brown Bag lecture presented by UNH Manchester faculty member Andrew Stangel Tuesday, March 29, at noon in the UNH Manchester auditorium.

The Black Death, as the Great Plague of the Middle Ages came to be called, was the worst epidemic ever to befall man and the greatest natural disaster in history! For generations Europe experienced unimaginable suffering. With death such a constant companion, mores and inhibitions collapsed. Social aberrancies manifest during the age of the Black Death are as much a chapter of social psychology as of history and must be understood in the reality of apocalyptic misery. That misery was expressed with haunting visual detail in the art, which was produced in the period of the Great Plague.

Stangel has received numerous academic honors and distinguished teaching awards. He has lectured at colleges and universities, museums, and galleries in the United States and Europe.

"Black Death: The Great Plague in Art and History" is free and open to the public. University Center is handicapped accessible. For more information call 641-4306.
