Wildcat Santa and Elderpet Accepting Holiday Donations

By Carie Schelfhaudt, Media Relations Writing Intern

For more than 15 years stacks of unwrapped Christmas presents have filled the Registrars Office and sat waiting to be taken to their new homes -- a family in need. It is the Christmas holiday season again, and the Wildcat Santa Committee members are eager to sort through hundreds of toys donated by the UNH and Durham community to support families in need of assistance this season.

Wildcat Santa’s Annual Toy Drive is collecting new and unwrapped toys and gifts for all age groups until Dec. 9. Last year, donations made by the UNH community supported 47 families during the holiday season.

Raffle tickets are on sale to win prizes donated by UNH and the Durham community Tickets can be purchased during this time by Wildcat Santa Committee members for $1 each or $5 for 6. Proceeds go to purchase gift certificates for items not collected and for local grocery gift certificates. The grocery gift certificates accompany the toy gifts to University and local families in need.

Local businesses and the UNH community also are joining in on the effort. Wild E. Cat stuffed animals donated by Hayden Sports are being sold for $15 each. Fifty percent of sales will go to the Wildcat Santa fund, and one stuffed animal will be included in every gift basket.
“It is remarkable that people are always so generous and so supportive of the UNH and Durham community,” Wildcat Committee member Christina VanHorn said.

In connection with Wildcat Santa, the Elderpet program at Thompson School of Applied Sciences is collecting pet food and supplies to assist elderly and disabled people with the care of their pets. For more information contact Jerilee Zezula at 2-1014.

Wildcat Santa boxes can be found at Dimond Library, Health Services, Registrar’s Office (Stoke Hall), Gables Apartments, McConnell Hall, NHPTV, Human Resources, Facilities (6 Leavitt Lane), Kingman Farm, UNH Manchester, Morse Hall, Parsons Hall Business Services, CIS, Dunlap Center, Holloway Commons.

Additional donations can be brought to the UNH Holiday Party Dec. 14 at the Whittemore Center. For more information contact Wildcat Santa Committee member Christina VanHorn at 2-0519.
