'Human Rights Democracy Initiatives: Successes and Challenges' Held at UNHM Dec. 8

The University of New Hampshire at Manchester, in collaboration with The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, is hosting a lecture to honor Human Rights Week. The lecture, “Human Rights and Democracy Initiatives: Successes and Challenges”, will be held Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7 p,m, at UNH Manchester, 400 Commercial Street, in the third floor auditorium.
 
The lecture will be given by Oscar G. DeSoto, director of the Office for the Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy at the State Department.  DeSoto is a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service. He assumed his present position as Director of the Office for Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy in August 2004.  In this position, he provides U.S. foreign policy direction and programmatic coordination for U.S. government activities promoting democracy and human rights worldwide. The office works with foreign governments, nongovernmental organizations, in addition to the State Department’s regional and functional bureaus, and the U.S. Agency for International Development to accomplish these objectives. He also oversees the Human Rights and Democracy Fund, an annual $147 million grant program to foster democracy and human rights initiatives.
 
The World Affairs Council of New Hampshire is a nonpartisan, membership organization that focuses exclusively on foreign affairs and offers lectures and luncheons to help promote the widest possible understanding of world affairs among the citizens of New Hampshire.
