2013 Summer Art Classes for Children and Teens

Summer Art Camp 2013

The Museum of Art 2013 Summer Art Camp program will run for two weeks: from July 29 - August 2, 2013 and August 5 - August 9, 2013.

$125 per class, $225 for two.

General Information:

All classes are held in the Paul Creative Arts Center EXCEPT Clay and Woodworking classes,
      which will be held in the Service Building, located on the corner of College Road and Library Way.
Class fees include the cost of materials. In some cases, additional costs may apply (ex. woodworking special projects)
Lunch is NOT provided.Children are welcome to bring their lunches to enjoy in the Paul Creative
Arts Center or outside.
Supervision is provided during the lunch hour.
The children will be working with a variety of messy art materials.
Children are asked to wear appropriate clothing and/or to bring old clothing.
Classes are subject to cancellation if rooms are not available or if the minimum enrollment of 6 is not met. The maximum enrollment for each class is 10 students unless approved by the instructor.
Please note that we do NOThave air conditioning.

Cost:
Cost per session: $125 ($225 for two sessions - the discount also applies for 2 children from one family). Additional material costs may apply.

Parking:
Parking is only allowed at metered spots (.25 per 15 min.) or in C-Lot, across from the Durham Market Place ($1 per hour).

Pick-up and Drop-off:
You may pick up and drop off your child at the Paul Creative Arts Center. We do not let the child leave unless we have eye contact with a parent or adult (whose name has been given to the Museum of Art in advance). There is one 15-min parking spot in front of the building, and two 30-minute spaces located past the building. Be sure to put on your blinkers. There are metered spots along front of the building at a cost of .25 per 15-minutes. UNH does ticket.

On the last day of class (for the exhibition), we recommend that you come early to get a parking space in front of the building or park in C-Lot across from the Durham Market Place.

2013 CLASSES AND DESCRIPTIONS

 

WEEK I
Monday, July 29 – Friday, August 2, 2013
Session I: Mornings (9 a.m. - noon)


1. THIS CLASS IS CLOSED
ArtBox - Kimberly Olson (Grades 2 – 3) Museum of Art (Down)
From paint box to crayon box we’ll explore different media and capabilities through drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture.

2. Basic Comic-making - Oluwaseun M. Odueyungbo (Grades 4-6) Rm. A205B
Learn basic comic-making techniques to weave a story about characters and worlds of your own creation!
We’ll focus on basic drawing skills to design characters and build backgrounds. Various comic styles will be explored. 

3. Woodworking: Planes Trains and automobiles! Molly Thunberg and Myles Duncanson (Grades 4 - 6) Wood Shop
Always wanted to make your dream car a reality? We will design, decorate, and build wooden vehicles and race them. Other projects will include making trains, planes, and boats!

4. Printmaking - Shane Chick (Grades 4 – 6) Printmaking Studio

5. From Colored Pencils to Paint -  Jesse James Thomas (Grades 4 - 6) Rm. A301
Experiment with materials and color in this discovery class! Drawing inspiration from still lifes, portraitures, and nature, we’ll use a variety of materials, including colored pencils, acrylic paint, and collage, to look at the relationships of color, shape, and light.

6. Nature, Architecture, and Portraiture - Holly Denoncourt (Grades 7 and up) Rm. A202
Explore photography through nature, architecture,  and portraiture as we explore the ins and outs of Photoshop. We’ll explore nature through the works of Brett Weston, architecture through works of Ezra Stoller and portraiture through works of Vivian Maier. This is a fun way to build your skills with the camera and Photoshop. No knowledge of photography or Photoshop is required. Digital camera and flash drive is required.

7. Creative Clay - Mary Alice Duke (Grades 7 and up) Clay Studio
Explore different hand building techniques, such as coil, pinch pots, and slab construction. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and squish some mud.

8. Knitting and Crocheting - Barbara Steinberg (Grades 7 and up) Museum of Art (up)
This course will explore hooks and needles used  different projects as well as basic stitches. New knitters explore choices of yarn and needles necessary in creating scarves, hand warmers and headbands.

 

WEEK I

Learn mixed media processes and the artists who use them - printmaking, sculpture, encaustic painting, bookbinding and more!

10. Basic Knitting and Crocheting - Barbara Steinberg (Grades  4 - 6) Museum of Art (up)
This course will explore hooks and needles used  different projects as well as basic stitches. New knitters explore choices of yarn and needles necessary in creating scarves, hand warmers and headbands.

11. Fun with Photography - Holly Denoncourt (Grades 4 - 6) Rm.A202
Let’s have fun this summer! Learn the basics of photography through solar prints, camera obscura, painting with light, and the basics of Photoshop. We’ll learn and explore the fundamentals of the camera and the building blocks to further your picture taking skills outside the classroom. Join us as we explore this developing medium! Digital Camera and flash drive is required.

13.Studio Painting - Jesse James Thomas (Grades 7 and up) Rm. A301
This session is for students who love to paint.  Students will focus on exploring a variety of subject matter including landscapes, portraits, and still life, in addition to acquiring a strong foundation in essential painting techniques.

14. Printmaking - Shane Chick (Grades 7 and up) Printmaking Studio

15. Advanced Comic-making - Oluwaseun M. Odueyungbo (Grades 7 and up) Rm. A205B
Create your own unique characters while developing skills in proportion, movement, and facial expression. Dynamic paneling, perspective, and lettering will be explored.

16. Introduction to Woodworking - Molly Thunberg and Myles Duncanson (Grades 7 – 9) Wood Shop
Learn some basic woodworking skills to make a picture frame, game board, cutting board, and small box. No previous experience required, come prepared for fun!

WEEK II

18. From the Ground Up - K. Lee Mock (Grades 4 - 6) Rm. A302
Build your foundation of drawing for your imagination to dance upon! Using both the landscape and still lifes, we will explore line, shape, value and color. Look at works from successful artists and find successes in our own work. Mediums will include pencils, collage, markers, and crayon, and some that we invent, too!

19. Introduction to Drawing - Gretchen Woodman (Grades 4 – 6)   Rm. A305
This class  focuses on developing drawing skills while having fun.  Students will participate in a wide variety of drawing exercises that will develop observational skills and creativity.  We will be doing gesture drawings, still life and landscape drawing, and a mystery drawing.  Students will use pencil, charcoal, charcoal powder and  ink as drawing mediums to explore ways that drawings can be created.  Students will also explore their special interests by working with pictures or photos and their imaginations.

Make a personalized door sign, light switch cover, pencil holder, tissue box, and book ends to decorate your room.

30. Paint, Color and More! - K Lee Mock (Grades 7 and up) Rm. A302
Examine the connections between line, shape, value and color and how they succeed together. We’ll work indoors with still lifes, and outside with the natural landscape. Mediums will include pencil, collage, markers, crayon, ink and more.

31. Introduction to Drawing - Gretchen Woodman (Grades 7 and up) Rm. A305
Students will participate in a variety of skill building exercises, including gesture drawing, perspective, still life and landscape drawing.  Students will also have the opportunity to explore their own special interests by drawing from pictures, photographs or their own imaginations. A variety of drawing materials will be used, including pencil, charcoal pencil, charcoal powder, and  ink.

34. Simple Wooden Toys - Molly Thunberg and Myles Duncanson (Grades 7 and up) Wood Shop
We’ll make several fun toys, such as a somersaulting acrobat, a kite, a tic tact toe board, a personalized puzzle, and a chest to keep it all in!
